Last night was the first that my 5 week old girls spent outside without any heat source. The low was upper 50s. Tonight we are having a big cool down, with a low around 35 and tomorrows high mid 50s. Should I get the heat back on? Thanks all!
Thanks to the advice I was given earlier this week from some of you, I moved my 4 week olds from the basement to the coop. Today we opened up some exits to let them explore. Overall, they are a little timid, but our Silver Laced Wyandotte (Kylo Hen) actually went exploring.
We recently picked up 4 new chicks. They are too young to be outside right now. We already have 6 hens outside, all around 2 years old. My question is, when I get to introducing the young birds to the rest, are there steps I should take to make the transition go as smoothly as possible? Tricks...
Do these birds look healthy to you? They are slightly larger than hatchlings, White Leghorns. They were at a local dealer last weekend, and dozens of them look like this.
Alright, my little flock of 6 is headed into their first winter. They are big and healthy. This fall has been warmer than normal, mid to upper 60s in the daytime. It looks like next week we may have a sudden drop in temps overnight, with a high forecast for 42. I am pretty sure that I am...
Cave man, can you please clarify? I have great summertime air flow, but ventilating without drafts, how do I accomplish that? My coup is 8x6x5, currently six birds. The coup is raised, with 2 small openings at floor level, 2 windows halfway up, people access door with screen, and one 4 foot by 4...
We have a buff orpington, as well as 2 welsummers, 2 easter eggers and a black cochin. The orpington has a great personality, lots of fun to have around.
I am late to this discussion, but yeah, I love to fish. I am in Northers Utah, also a desert, but the mountains are loaded with small streams with trout. I am headed to Central Utah next week to try my luck on some new streams. Here are a couple of browns my friend and I caught last year about...
Yeah, there are 2 Olive Eggers. We found them as Ameraucanas, but they are not, strictly speaking. We also have one Buff Orpington, a Black Cochin, and two Wellsummers. They each have their own personalities which has been cool. I have been a reptile guy up to this point, but I enjoy these girls...
So far we haven't found any evidence that they are laying anywhere but their nesting boxes. We read about leaving fake eggs in each one and tried that (we got wooden ones from a craft store). There have been none left in the run and we only have them in the yard when we can monitor them.
My wife and I had discussed getting chickens for a couple of years, and just this Spring decided to jump in! We got 6 birds started in our basement while I built a coop in the yard. Who would have thought that we would love having these girls around?
Two weeks ago we started getting eggs, and...
Howdy from Utah. We have had our birds since April and just started getting (tiny) eggs 2 weeks ago. My wife and I are amazed at how much we enjoy having them around. BYC is a fantastic site to learn from.
