Free Hens...RIR, NHR or Production Red mix?

We caught these birds on my Aunt and Uncles property last week (see "Managing your flock" under thread "Chickens were hurricane victims too"). I was told that when the birds first arrived, they were all RIR's. And over time, mixed in with Buff Orphingtons. I'm wondering if they were actually...

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

Thanks rhoda_bruce...that's the kind of info I was looking for! I really wish I could go get the rest of those birds....there is just way too many. I live in a residential neighborhood where no roos are allowed and my yard (although larger than most) is not big enough for a larger coop. I NEED...

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

Hello again! Does anybody have any idea of when these birds might be calmed down enough to start laying eggs? I know they slow down during the winter months due to lack of daylight, but surely they will lay some eggs right? I have 2 nest boxes that are 16"x16"x16". They or over one another...

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

My Aunt and Uncle built a coop and hen house and took in some of the birds about a year after they arrived (they lured them into the pen with cracked corn). They clipped their wings (as their coop has no roof), and bought 2 Buff Orphingtons hens (cause my aunt liked them for brooding). My Aunt...

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

We took out the stump and the few other logs...They are ALL on the roost tonight! Didn't need the step ladder either! They are a little timid...they come as close as 2 ft. from me; when I first go in the coop, they all huddle in a corner...but once I start with food they get pretty close. While...

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

Thank you all for your kind wishes. Now if we can just get them to roost on the bar. They like to huddle up on a hollowed out tree stump in the run area which is not protected from the dew that falls during the night. The roost bar is a 2x4 with the edges rounded off (4" side up), and stands...

Might get 2 more, but that would be it, due to the limited space I have. This is my "Urban" Flock!

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

We had no trouble at all catching them...my Aunt, Uncle, DH, & I watched them get in the underbrush (right at dusk) and plotted the ones to grab...as dusk fell to darkness, we just each grabbed one by their feet and put them all in a dog crate! It was over in less than 5 mins! Was a fun time...

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

Kittymomma.... I will follow the qarantine guidelines should this "wild" flock work out. If it doesn't a "WHOLE" brand new flock will be here. How long should I wait should I choose to remove the entire flock of wild birds (keep in mind, I will have treated for all parasites & worms, upon...

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

Thanks to ALL... Keep the info coming....This place IS addictive...I spent almost 8 hrs here Sat. doing research (hatching, brooding, etc.) And have been here for at least 2-3 hrs. a day gaining knowledge. Sorry-off topic... I'm thinking of bringing a smaller kennel and asking my...

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

I realize that I'm sure to get a mutt breed here. May or may not be good layers. I also know laying slows in the winter. But I am excited to see how things work out. So if things don't work out and this "wild" bunch doesn't stay...say I've treated all parasites...there should be no harm in...

Like I said earier...try before I buy....besides, what's the worse that can happen? I either take them back or they feed my family? Right?

    Chickens were Hurricane Victims too!

No...roo was not in the plan...just wondered how long eggs might be fertile after getting them home. So if they don't lay due to stress for more than 3 days, chances are they will not hatch?
