Thanks you guys! This really helped me to consider some new things. Because I only have a few chickens and need to refill food daily, I think I will go with:

The product specifies that I should have an 18" rise. I do think 2' looks more reasonable than 1', but It just doesn't line up with anything on the building. I'm just gonna keep...
I'm finally settling into a permanent chicken set up and wanted to crowd source how you keep all your chicken stuff. We had outside construction for a long time, so had temporary housing for the chickens, and literally had bags of feed in our dining room and on the kitchen counter, but things...
Thanks, Terry! Your run looks great (as does your garden)! My lower option is about a foot rise to 6' run. So, maybe it would work. The metal I intend to use has installation instructions of using 5/8" OSB. Clearly it's intended for real roof application on a real building, and I don't want...
Thanks, Dom. My first illustration is like a foot rise for a 6' run, so not too much smaller than yours. But still, I agree, it does seem really shallow in pitch. I'd wager the second illustration is about 3' rise. Building aside, I think I like the way 2' rise looks, but I just can't come...
Hm, I'm sure more experienced chicken owners could advise you better, but maybe you have a ventilation problem.
As I said, mine seems to do fine, and I've added some of the old litter from my other coop, so I expect it will continue to do well.
Good luck to you!
I've seen it done without ground contact, and it's been suggested to leave a little bit of the old bedding when cleaning it out to keep the good bacteria going like good gut bacteria. It worked well enough in my old coop which was elevated off the ground.
First, I should explain that I live in a historic house and must have anything on our property approved by a historical commission in a very painful and lengthy process. After two years of process, we finally got to build a new garage this year. I ordered 6 peeps for my February birthday with...
I thought I might inherit a couple wooden ladders, but it turns out not. I'm hesitant to install permanent ones just yet, cause I have to get in there to frame the roof, but a pallet is perfect! And I have a couple in the basement!
Thanks!
I'm putting a metal roof on my run, and have a few questions:
1) did you sheath your roof with OSB or just attach the metal to the rafters?
2) I think code here is 18" O.C., but I may go with 24" O.C. if I sheath, cause it's not a real roof, but I do need it to support snow.
3)...
I've just done this very thing. My hens moved in about a week and a half ago; so far so good! We'll see how winter goes. The walls are not insulated, but I have lined the inside of the walls with OSB so that the building isn't harmed (also assuming the R value will be higher than the average...
I've been trying to distract my chickens to help with some behaviour/ getting along issues. I had a flock block that I was trying to save, but I threw it in there which is helping some. I may hang a wiffle ball for them to play with or a cabbage. I've seen videos of chickens pecking a...
Thanks! Maybe I'll give them a shot this weekend. She is my best layer! She is just so nervous (but not in an anxious way). I put a flock block in the run yesterday to add some distraction for the time being. I may hang a wiffle ball on a string when they finish that. She has a couple peck...
Does anyone know where in MA to buy pullets? (not necessarily now) I would like to add 2-3 more hens to my flock. I raised peeps last year, so I'm not ready to do it again for a bit. I have 2 coops, 1 which I will sell in the Spring (but could hold on to for a short time), but not 2 runs...
