Can you tell me about your Isa Browns? Where did you find them and most importantly...do they lay a dark brown egg like you find in the grocery store? Those are hard to find.

    Bloody backs now healed ?

Can you just put the new ones in a small cage inside with the older hens...after a few days or a week they will be use to each other. Then they will have to come to a pecking order. The young ones will give the others plenty of room...of course there might be an older one that is really...

    Some silly questions

Like all the others said....they do not need a heat lamp! As it gets colder, they will grow what feathers they need in order to stay warm. How many do you have? How big is their pen? We found that it was another hen picking and eating the feathers that were causing our hens to look like they...

    i WANTsome EGGS!! Dang it!

What breeds are they? I know with the sex-links, we get eggs everyday, but with others not so often, and they have to be older before they start laying.

    Please help

Well, I don't know if I can help you, but here are some suggestions. Can you close the boxes at night before the hens are suppose to roost? That should make them go back to the roost. Are you taking the eggs from the broody hen? Also, you might put her in a cage with water and food and no...

What color are your Welsummer eggs?

Hmmmm well, I can see that there is not a consistant (sp) Wellie egg out there. Our hens are from Welp...the hens do look the same, but they don't all lay the same color. Each has her own size and color. But we do like their eggs.

    Dark Eggs

Yes, the spotted ones look like our Welsummers...dark with spots. We also have a RI Red that lays a nice dark egg, but no spots. I was hoping to have a sex-link that would lay a dark egg, but they don't. So I would guess it is the Marans and the RI Reds. Need to put in a camera...

Does having a rooster really mess up the egg laying???? pls clarify!

I'm glad he is a nice roo...they are just a wee bit young to lay. So, No he is not the problem. In fact, he might be helping them arrange the nest. Sometimes the rooster gets in a nesting box and fixes it up.

The girls do not like the wind...what am I to do?

I believe this might be normal chicken behavior...Is there something for them to eat out in the run? Can you put up some kind of wind break? Is it so bad that they don't come out when it is windy...after all, they may not want to mess up their feather.:O)

    Cooking sparrows

Hmmmm I guess if a person was starving...a sparrow would be food. I think they do get into some nasty stuff when looking for food. I don't know if it would be worth the effort/time to cook them for yourself. Safe? I just don't know what they might carry, but I am with you on getting rid of...

    Chicken Pile-Up!

Do you want them to sleep on the roost? If so, you will need to move them after dark onto the roost. It may take a few times, or you can block off the nesting boxes before it is time for them to roost. It might be easier to make the change while they are young. They do look happy.

    Aggressive Hens

Sounds like you are doing the best thing...I would get rid of the roo.. I hate to see the poor hens with bare back. The others that were causing problems were the sex-links? So it sounds like they had hormonal problems. We don't keep a rooster and we have never had a hen acting like a roo...

    Hen sleeping in box? ADozengirlz??

Yep the hens find it very nice in the box, but you have enough "stuff" brought into the box on their feet. You don't need poop also. What you are looking for it an egg without mud or poop on it.

    Anticipation... killing me...

You should be able to catch one early in the morning....singing and checking out the nesting boxes. The ones getting ready to lay, just act different.

    Sally is over protective.

That is right, the mommy is suppose to protect her chick...the big ones could start pecking the baby and they would kill it. The others will learn to run.

    May I introduce Cleo...

I am so jealous!! Where did you get this hen and she is a red sex-link?...we have been trying to get some dark eggs like that for years. We now have some RIR, sex-links, and Welsummers and none of them lay that dark color. I hope you enjoy them.
