Processing - Fat or no fat?

Thank you, Diamond Dan and DT12. I will leave the fat there. These are my oldest birds. (6 months) and I didn't know if they would begin to taste gamey at that age. I am letting them rest in the fridge at the moment. We plan to have them for dinner on Thursday. Thanks again, Dave

Processing - Fat or no fat?

Hey folks. Once again I come to you with a question. I have just processed four quail. Three of them had quite a bit of fat on them. (I skinned them but left the fat for now.) Do you leave the fat and let it cook with the meat or do you trim them and add a fat like bacon, oil, or butter...

    Tough Question

Thanks to all for your wonderful responses. I mistakenly thought that genetics were the prime contributor. Many of the quail entering day three have "fixed" themselves. I still have four - out of 27 - that are in tough shape. I will apply tape wraps this afternoon and hope for the best. Thanks...

    Tough Question

I have 7 new coturnix with splayed legs born yesterday and today. I am going to wait a couple days to see if things improve. My question is this - Should I try to fix them or should I cull them to get rid if that genetic trait from my flock? I tried fixing five from my first hatch last spring...

    Power Down

Sunday was supposed to be "hatch" day. I had 6 hatch on Sunday. One died shortly after that. Today 15 more have popped out. Five or six of them have very splayed legs but the others appear healthy. I am going to keep the lid on the 'bator for another day and see what happens. Thanks to all for...

    Power Down

@ Field... There are/were 49 Coturnix eggs in there. @ HenOnA... Thanks. This is helpful. I already own the batteries since I use them in our large boat. I always carry a spare which could easily be taken out when the boat isn't in use.

"I can twiddle only so fast... Arthritis..lol" Right there with ya. ;)

    Power Down

Thanks for the encouragement. I assumed they would all be dead or deformed. Perhaps there will be a few that make it. I have 49 in the incubator. <twiddles faster> :)

    Power Down

No candling yet. I figured it was more important to get the heat back on them first. Now I am twiddling thumbs and waiting until Sunday night. :(

    Power Down

So, 36 hours before the expected hatch the power went down in my shop without my knowledge. The eggs were without heat for eight and a half hours. When I went to check this morning the temp was 71. I restored power immediately but am very frustrated. Don't really have a question or know what to...

    Day 15?

Thanks Feedman77. I have been running at 40-45% humidity which is basically our local atmosphere here by Lake Superior right now. I will add a wet cloth on Thursday. Thanks again, Dave

    Day 15?

Thanks, Paneubert, for your help. Just to be extra safe I think day 14, which is Thursday, I will pull the turner and bump up the humidity. In my first hatch I had one come early and was caught/crippled in the turner. They are delicate little buggers. Thanks again, Dave PS. Should I turn them...

    Day 15?

Coturnix quail. Thanks for your reply though. Dave

    Day 15?

Hey folks. Just as a refresher for me, and possibly others, on which day do I take out the autoturner and bump up the humidity? This will be my second hatch. My first was poor - 8 out of 48 - but those were shipped eggs. This time around I am using the eggs from my quail. (Eggs from three hens...

Marans, Opringtons and Wyandottes as Table birds

We have eaten our old layers at five and six years of age. We think they make the absolute best stock of any bird. We feed a lot of grain in their final summer and they get pretty fat. We skin them rather than plucking. The meat is cut off the carcass and cubed for soup. The carcass and fat are...

    15 day old eggs?

Thanks, DuluthRalphie. That is helpful. I had hoped someone would have had experience with older eggs. Thanks again, Dave

    15 day old eggs?

Hey group. I have saved the eggs from my three hens (Plus one roo) for the last fifteen days. Last night I put them all in the incubator. (LG with heat/fan/egg turner) I meant to only keep ten days worth of eggs but time got away from me and I didn't date them as I saved them. Will the old and...

    Two-Story Broody?

Hi. One of my Easter Eggers went broody in the spare chicken coop. (That's good!) It is one of those two-story Tractor Supply jobs with the roost and nest boxes above and the run below with a ramp. The eggs should hatch Tuesday or Wednesday this week. Here's my question - What will happen when...
