I currently have several Coturnix quail that are right over 6 weeks old. Many are starting to lay, but I am concerned with what I am feeding them. Ever since they were little chicks they have eaten the 30% purina game bird feed that TSC carries; however, I am wondering if I need to change...
Thanks for the reply! That’s what I’ve determined for all the others, but I’m thinking one just has some musculoskeletal disorder or something. I think it’s just the way the air is entering the bird making the noise.
Good evening, all!
I have some week old French White Marans, and there is one that I have a slight concern about:
I do not know the gender yet, but this one is just slightly smaller (barely noticeable). Looking at it, nothing appears wrong. It doesn’t sneeze, no discharge anywhere, nor any...

It’s likely a wheaten Easter egger, or possibly white. I can see the legs are getting a dark color, which is not indicative of a leghorn. Their legs should stay orange and possibly change to pinkish white.
Yes, I’m looking closely at the color of the comb at this time, but I have some sex-links that look identical at that aspect. Personally, I would have expected to see that “leghorn-like” growth with the minorcas. I can tell my leghorns apart after the first week from comb size, but not this...
Good evening, all!
I have a few 4 week old chicks, and there is one that I cannot determine the gender on. I ordered a black Minorca male with my red sex links, but after 4 weeks, there is no noticeable difference. Is this just a slower-developing breed, or do I have a pullet, you think...
Hello, y’all! My pullets are almost 8 months old and have been laying (3 months for the leghorns and 2 for the cuckoo marans). However, my eggs are still the size of some of the pullet eggs I’m seeing. I’m used to the eggs being what I refer to as “store sized eggs” by now, but they are still...
I was just wondering as it’s not supposed to be consumed (if a chick was to peck and eat it). My rationale for KY jelly would be that it dries out, but retains its properties. For example, chicken poo would reactivate it. Also, I could not imagine anything wanting to peck at either Vaseline...
I, too, am amazed of how high they’re roosted. I was lucky for mine to clear the 1 foot roost pole.
I cannot speak on behalf of all Polish chickens, but mine never did use the nipple waterer. They tried, but they just couldn’t find the right coordination. Mine were buff laced Polish.
Hello!
I had a few chicks like this come in from a hatchery. A couple of them even had torn vents (from sexing I’d guess). I was furious, but they lived fine. The issue persisted for most of their “chick”hood, but once they were grown, the issue was no longer present. They laid just fine...
Hello, all:
I have had a guinea for almost a year. He arrived as a little keet, very weak; however, he managed to grow up just fine. He anyways had a little sneeze now and then, but his nostrils and eyes remained clear, and he flew around and lived just fine.
After some rough weather, I...
You did grasp it right! Personally, I look closely at genetics. Something I’d like to share is that many (“most” might be more accurate) hatcheries did not sell pure-bred standard breeds such as white leghorns, RIR, barred Plymouth rocks, etc; rather, they are a hybrid of different strains —...
As we all know, hatcheries have their best egg layers that they do not recommend for reproduction because “they will not retain the same characteristics in future generations.” However, have any of y’all put this to test? I will be doing so soon, and I’d like to hear from y’all before breeding...
