That is cruel, and I am disgusted to read that. I support shooting a dog or any other animal that is on your property terrorizing or killing your pets/livestock/etc, but to hope you injure a dog to the point that it makes its way back home, dying, is sick. It isn't the dogs fault the owner is...
I am so very sorry for the loss of your birds. I would be devastated, as I consider all of my animals pets. A couple things-I would definitely way, WAY shorten that letter. (I understand you were just venting in that letter, which is good, but now that you've gotten it all off your chest I'd get...
Hi, sorry if this has been asked and answered, I couldn't find much on it.
Working on building our coop, and want to plan ahead with some different sections I have planned. I plan to have it sectioned off in one area for introducing new birds to the flock, or to put chickens who I specifically...
Okay, I will consider brooding them all in the regular coop from the beginning, but there is one major downside for me. I was counting on having chicks in the house helping my dogs get used to them from the beginning. I suppose I can always take the dogs out to the coop a couple times a day, but...
The coop will be large.. well over a hundred square feet, so we will definitely have to make a smaller section for the babies. Never heard of using heating pads, that sounds like an easy option. Or the self heating box, will have to look into that. We will have electricity out there. Thanks for...
Brooder will be in the house. The LF chicks would be the only ones in the coop at a month old, and we can definitely put a heat lamp in there if needed.
I live in Wisconsin, and this winter has been all over the place- It's hard to say what the temps will be at that point!
Okay, I've been reading and planning and drawing and reading some more, and I think I've come up with a plan for brooding my chicks.
I've got 15 chicks coming first week of March (6 are silkies, rest are LF). I have another 15 coming first week of April. Would have had them come at the same...
Hello, just looking for some input from experienced goat (or sheep, llama, etc) people. We have five acres with several old buildings, and we are trying to decide where we should put the goats. We have an old building probably 30 or 40 feet behind the house that I would really like to turn into...
Thanks! That is really helpful. So, maybe they will all just have to free range together, when I am home and able to keep an eye on them. Hopefully my silkies and LF will be able to stay together with no problems
Thanks for your thoughts, so I suppose I will wait and see how it goes and handle it from there. I have six silkies coming first week of March and 17 large fowl pullets coming first week of April. I am hoping the silkies and LF will integrate well but if they don't, maybe I will build another...
Hi there, I have had so many questions answered by old threads, but I have one I haven't come across yet.
I have read that some chicken breeds specifically prefer free ranging, and that some are happier (or at least perfectly content) living in a run.
Does anyone have their run sectioned off...
I have one order coming from Murray Murray, and one from My Pet Chicken. Total of 23 for pets/eggs, one free, rare chick from Murray, and 10 males that will be given to a neighbor for meat. So excited!
Hi, I am getting 17 chicks (mixture of orpingtons/rocks/etc) first week of April, and I'm interested in getting silkies as well. If I wait until summer or next spring to get them, will they adjust just fine to living with my large chickens? Or am I better off brooding them together?
Hi there!
Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jami, I had chickens as a kid for pets and 4-H competition and absolutely adored them. I had multiple different breeds and I loved them to pieces! We did a lot wrong, I don't think any of our chickens lasted more than a couple years before...
