Official BYC Poll: What Are The Top Causes of Death in Your Backyard Flock?

Thankfully, where I am currently living there aren't a heap lot of predators, just a number of coyotes that have never been able to hope the fence-line (knock on wood). Most of what's killed my flock is disease or that sudden death that seems to happen out of the blue. Alive and fine one day...

Anyone know what color this is called?

Sooo I just found some pictures in Craigslist back east that show roosters looking just like him and the seller is saying they are Cream Buttercup Pattern. I'd post a picture but I'm a bit paranoid about someone saying I stole the pictures. Anyway, I think you hit the nail on the head! Thanks so...

Anyone know what color this is called?

That looks exactly like he did at that age! I couldn't find a side photo but here's one of him around that age and then one a bit older. Cream buttercup, Ooo, that sounds so nice.😆 Thanks!! That really helps, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who had that color of chick!:D Ideal used to have...

Anyone know what color this is called?

Those little markings are what sold me on him, they were just to unique and I did not want to leave the store without him. They do kinda look like the buttercup chicks though don't they? I never had even considered that until you mentioned it. That's the closest I've seen any chick resemble him.

Anyone know what color this is called?

I'll admit I had to go look up what those colors looked like, I'd never heard of quill before.😅 The silver quill pictures I saw did look a lot like him with their patterns, so maybe the Golden quill is the right color. I don't know if this would help, but I know when I bred him to a B. B. Red...

Anyone know what color this is called?

@Overo Mare I know right? It has kinda a spangled look but not quite. I've only see this coloration one other time and I still regret that I didn't buy those birds.

Anyone know what color this is called?

I had this roo a few years back but for the life of me I have never been able to find out what color he was. I saw some other Old English birds on Craigslist who had similar coloring awhile after he had passed, but wasn't really in a position where I should get more chickens... Could I have...

Sick hen with swollen throat and the area around left eye, and discharge from left nostril.

Hm.. Do have any suggestions on how to keep her head still while I do the compress and try to unplug her nose? I did try the compress but she's so touchy about her head she about drives me nuts with how much she pull away.. There hasn't been any puss but there is a lot of clear drainage that...

Sick hen with swollen throat and the area around left eye, and discharge from left nostril.

Ok so I'm swallowing my pride a bit right now. I have a hen who got, what I believed to be, a sinus infection awhile back and I treated her, she seemed to be on the mend, and then I left town for awhile. I got back and to my horror I found her left nostril plugged/deformed and the discharge that...

Rescued Rooster with severe Bumblefoot (Both feet) advice/help needed.

Thank you so much for all the info, I will quickly say I'm relieved I won't have to dig into those feet, (yet?) as that was worrying me. Most of the stuff I'd heard on bumblefoot encouraged you to do some minor surgery asap but I'm glad that isn't the case. I hope that the espom salts will help...

Rescued Rooster with severe Bumblefoot (Both feet) advice/help needed.

Alright, I can get started with the epsom salts and such. I'm not to sure what you mean by gout as that is a new term for me. I'll admit I have no clue what he was able to eat or get to before so it could've been diet related... I wouldn't be surprised if there are some other problems with the...

Rescued Rooster with severe Bumblefoot (Both feet) advice/help needed.

Here are some pics of the bottoms off his feet hopefully this will help with something... I'll say more in the morning, but in the meantime thank you so much for the advice already given!!! Both for the scaly leg mites and the bumblefoot!!! My flock has been getting mites lately anyway so the...

    Rotten smell from beak?!

The nano/liquid Silver I get I normally will have them drink in their water or I'll have them drink it directly. Spraying it on or up their nose has worked to, though they hate it, (can't really blame them) but it works. You could also spray it on their feed I guess. I sometimes use an eye...

Rescued Rooster with severe Bumblefoot (Both feet) advice/help needed.

Hey all, so a neighbor of mine rescued 32 chickens awhile back and I'm helping him care for them. The flock of course came with some "Baggage" and while the other things I know how to deal with there is one rooster with a nasty case of bumblefoot, on both feet! I've never had to deal with...

    Rotten smell from beak?!

I sure hope that everything goes well, I have two hens with a repertory/sinus infection right now.. one of them has it only in one nostril as well and I've been treating her for days but since I was out of town when it hit her it got to ingrained to kick quick.. I'm going to guess that your hen...

    New egg in the flock!

Hey thanks so much I'm glad to be here!! OH! I didn't know about the "what breed or gender is this" page that will be great to look into!! Yeah it's been kind noisy since they got here, I'm a bit worried about the neighbors opinions on the crowing.. my bantam boys were at least quieter then...

    New egg in the flock!

Hey all! I've watched this site for awhile, looking for info and advice, and finally decided to join in! I've kept poultry for years, ducks, a rather moody goose, chickens, pigeons, and a short adventure with button quail, but I have mainly raised chickens! I've also worked with other breeds of...
