We had a few hens that had frost bite on combs with this past cold spell we had, not above freezing until today! We treated with neosporin ointment, an over the counter med, which also is like vaseline when you coat it on. All recovered without problem, did not have to cut any combs.
Just had a friend who lost all his hens, and runner ducks in one night do to a dog that got in his yard. Tragic. He loved them like we do. We have a collie, that protects ours. As a herding dog, it's natural for her. If she see's a turkey vulture, hawk, coyote, whatever, she goes into...
Well mine love their dust bath bin, and get PO'd when I don't bring treats. Try some pasta, I boiled up some linguine today and took that out. They thought it was worms I'm sure, it was a wild battle to get it. I also have a worm farm and especially in the winter, I take them a special treat...

Glad I found this site! The info is invaluable. In frigid cold Wisc., the tips about using a full spectrum light to help with decreased egg production was great. Having a dirt bath area in the coop since the ground is snow covered, (used ash, sand, & potting soil) was well received. The best...
We had an Orpington Rooster, who was amazing. Smartest chicken we ever had, and loved to be held. We gave him away, as we only have laying hens, and don't hatch any. The lady we gave him too, said he is the best rooster she ever had. Protects his ladies. He was a a very handsome guy. Keith
Thank you for the info. I do use red heating lamps because I read somewhere that a red light helped prevent pecking abuse. Since they are now all adults, I will try the full spectrum light. Always something new to learn about these fascinating creatures! Keith
Hi, We live in Wisconsin, with our 11 ladies. They have been averaging 10 eggs a day until recently. Now only 5 a day. I have two heat lamps, heated waterer, have increased carbs for cold weather, we feed a natural egg mash for feed, and grow alfapha sprouts for their "greens". The temp in...
