My rooster is one of the rare ones, a great big boob! Loves to follow me around and sits on my lap, but is also great with his girls. He is a Barred Rock, and I am totally besotted with his charm and personaliy!
Terry, just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed reading your thread. My dear hubby and I are neophytes with chickens, it all started with a rescued rooster! Your coop is impressive, your attachment to your chickens is sweet, but your love for your wife and mother are glowing, golden...
I was told these are Black Star by the person I took them from. I have my doubts. The little one with a topknot looks like a cross, both have black feathers that are iridescent green in the sun. Any ideas? They are over a year old. They have the most lovely large, dark eyes!
Thanks in advance!
The reason I am asking about dipping is, I will have to do it myself. Because of arthritis in my hands, that amount of spraying is extremely difficult for me. Whereas if I dip my chickens, I can then towel them until damp, then blow dry them. They can even stay in my mudroom, with a heater...
Is there any reason one should NOT use the diluted formula as a dip rather than a spray? I only have 3 chickens and it would be quite simple to dip them rather than have to spray, spray, spray!
:) I did put in my post that we will be using this coop on the eastern shore of Virginia, but right now I am in PA and using a converted dog kennel for my flock. I do understand about the ventilation, and I will have to check about that under the eaves, I think it has ventilated soffit rather...
We will be allowing the flock the run of the yard as long as I am home, which is most of the time . Otherwise there will be a safe run for them to be outside. I was wondering if insulating the ceiling would help with the heat?
I love that it is wheeled, that will allow me to change location for...
What do you think? This gives me a 4 x 8 coop, room underneath for shade, movable, plenty of roost and nest space for some creative chicken math. . . but I would want to insulate the roof probably, more for heat than cold protection on the eastern shore of VA. Opinions, ideas, anyone?

Love it! I am a closet addict. We are going to be moving as soon as I have my knee replaced and therapy done. I am forbidden to get any more chickens until after we move. HOW EVER, I have a massive list of birds to order, and since my dear hubby will not be moving at the same time. ...
Thanks to you all. I have some starter feed, I will switch feed tomorrow. They have access to a dish of oyster shell, and I also whirl the eggshells in the food processor to give them.
I really want to try fermenting feed. Any suggestions for how much to start for 3 birds?
Can you tell I'm new...
Hi all!
So I just read that only laying hens should get layer feed because the calcium in it will harm non-layers. So how do I keep my rooster from eating it when I use a feed dispenser in the coop? Should I use a different feed that they can all eat and just hope the hens eat enough calcium...
