Thanks so much for the input. I think I am going to go with the Narragansetts...maybe throw in a few BR just for fun...the local farm has hatching eggs and if i can pick them up to avoid getting scrambled by USPS, then I think it will be cheaper to hatch (unless I mess it up:)) Thanks for the...
Thanks for the advice...I guess I can always CL extras if I have them make it past the first month. I think i am leaning toward the Narragansett...but I just saw someone with a farm not too far from me that has some heritage turkeys and now I'm thinking about going that route. They are offering...
Well I ended up with a friends full grown RP & BR about this time last year and had them for two weeks before realizing that I wasn't ready to take on turkeys But I really fell in love with them while they were here...especially the Royal Palm. I loved the way she seemed to "purr" for me when I...

Interesting...thank you so much for the info! I definitely wouldn't considering her SQ with the comb & wattles so large, but this is my mom's bird and it is just a pet for her anyways. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks everyone for the input. I didn't realize that partridge roos & hens have different feathering patterns...good to know! I've just never seen a hen with such large comb & wattles!

I am confused about the single comb...the comb on this bird looks nothing like single comb on birds like my RIR. It looks identical to the walnut comb that my silkie roos have. Maybe it is just the bad picture or are you seeing something that I'm not?
Thanks!
I wonder if the prolapse could have anything to do with it being sort of "roo-ish"? I don't know why that would have any bearing on anything but, just curious...
It prolapsed with it's first egg, we actually had to "cut" to get the egg out, since we couldn't find any opening to get the egg out. Luckily it seems to be recovering well so far (thanks to the all the prolapse info I found on BYC). It has even layed one more egg since then and it is inside in...
No it is a walnut comb and very pronounced wattles as well. Maybe I will try for a better picture.
This is still a young bird (7 months) but it looked to me like it has small streamers starting, but I'm still learning too, so I'm not positive.
Okay, I'm not even sure where to post this...
This is a silkie that i gave to my mom as a chick. It comes from decent silkie lines (purchased the eggs from a reputable BYC member).
My mom has heard this bird crow and I was positive by the looks of it (large comb) that this was a he....

Okay, so after a few weeks of playing musical eggs and hens trying to take over boxes and then all 3 deciding to go broody...my first broody hatched out her 4 eggs yesterday.
So now the hen next to her has decided that chicks look like more fun than eggs. When I got home from work today she had...
I checked on her tonight and when I reached under her to feel the eggs, one of them was fluffy!!!! So hopefully the other 3 will turn fluffy overnight, lol.
I actually threw them under the hen next to her (apparently silkies all go broody at the same time ). And then she came back in a little bit later and I put the eggs back under her. They are pipped but no other changes...hopefully something happens. I had to leave so I wouldn't keep running out...
So I went out to my coop this morning to check on the eggs that my broody is sitting. Today is day 22...I notice that she is outside when I walk out there. And when I get in the coop, 3 of her eggs are pipping! What in the world was she thinking???? This is seriously the first time i have ever...
I gave my sister some fertile eggs for one of her broody hens and 4 of them hatched...
Well, she never planned on keeping them and is going to give them back to me. My question is, I now have 3 broody silkies and I am wondering if I could stick the babies under one of the hens instead of...
Thanks so much for all the advice! I'm glad I haven't totally ruined this, lol. I walked out to the coop tonight and the only other hen that is laying (she only started laying 2 weeks ago) is now broody as well. She is now trying to hatch some pine shavings . I had heard that silkies like to be...
My husband and I went out of town for our anniversary and came home to find not only one, but two of my silkies broody. These are my first broody birds and i wasn't really prepared to do the broody bird thing yet. Neither had eggs under them, as the people that were "chicken sitting" for me...

There is a HUGE difference between a Silkie and a full, standard sized rooster. My Silkie roo and even my Bantam Salmon Faverolle roo have never scared me, but a full sized roo coming at me with all his might has been a different story. They hurt and are not fun to be flogged by.
Oh...
What breed is he? I would just like to point out that my dearest Muffin (named when I thought he was a she:)) also danced for me. But he never tried to flog or do anything more than dance for me. He greeted me in the front yard and would let me pick him up and hold him. He would also wait for a...
