raised bed garden + chickens: advice please

Thanks for the input. So general consensus is 3’ wide beds. I am convinced. Looked at 4’ high “garden fence” at Tractor Supply today that seems more sturdy - seems to be like goat fence with a green poly coating. Should be nicer to look at and high enough to deter the girls. (Most of the...

raised bed garden + chickens: advice please

Sketch of the garden I will be building weekend after next: My suburban half acre is surrounded by 6’ vinyl fence. The 8 chooks free range in back yard on nice days and destroy all our decorative plants, would like them to not destroy the veggies too. I was planning 4x8 garden boxes but my...

Puffy eyelids, otherwise healthy and laying

Thanks yall. Update: still the same discoloration and puffiness, maybe slightly less than before. Definitely no eye discharge or respiratory symptoms. Have left her alone as don’t have any drops handy so think we will let this heal on its own. Does not appear infected?

Puffy eyelids, otherwise healthy and laying

The description at link below seems way worse than what she’s got. She is healthy and laying and just has the eyelids a little puffy. Unless it evolves over the next week and gets worse? They haven’t been out to graze much the past week or two with the recent cold snap so we are not sure how...

Puffy eyelids, otherwise healthy and laying

My buff Orpington has some odd puffiness and discoloration of her eyelids. She seems fine. Is this something that needs to be addressed or just leave it alone?

How do YOU winterize your coop?

Getting ready for our second winter with chickens in Long Island, NY. I have 8 hens in a 4x4x4 coop on 2’ tall stilts with 6x8 covered run attached plus the 4x4x2 under the coop. Last winter I wrapped all the run wire with heavy plastic sheeting just leaving 1-2” bare at the top on all sides...

    Yellow Jackets. . .BEWARE!!!!

Watch closely and there is probably a concealed hole under a plant somewhere they are coming in and out of. PS: the DE did kill those yellow jackets. Dead and gone, never seen again

Finally the answer to the question: can chickens swim?

my pool just has chlorine, same thing that's in your public drinking water, just in higher level. And baking soda to maintain pH. well, its probably at least a third "my kids' urine" at this point but I don't think that counts as a chemical? :lau

    RIP: “Taco” the chicken

Taco was our favorite chicken from our first round of backyard chickens. She was a Barred Rock. She was the alpha but not by bullying - she was their leader. Taco stood up to our dog when he got out of control playing. Taco alerted the others whenever a hawk came near and hearded her friends...

16wk Black Australorp and RI Red - Pullets or cockerels

Phew :celebrate that’s what I thought but the sickle and the constant fight for pecking order had me worried. We’ve been down to 3-5 eggs per day from our other 6 (one of whom hasn’t laid since April - how do you spell “chicken stew”?) so could use the reinforcements.

16wk Black Australorp and RI Red - Pullets or cockerels

Got 3 new chicks this year to reinforce he flock. Since 8 weeks old the RIR and BA have gone toe to toe on many occasions, fluffing our their hackle feathers and puffing chests. They (along with their friend, a white rock) are all starting to get a little red in the combs, fine, but what got me...

    Help!!! My chicken stop laying

My alpha Hen is a hatchery Barred rock from last spring. She laid from August through March hardly missing a day even in the dark of winter. Then her shells got thin and her productions slowed for a month or two and now she hasn’t laid an egg since May. Same as you she isn’t sick, doesn’t...

This chicken hasn’t laid an egg in weeks

Our alpha chicken, Taco, is a 15 month old Barred rock who laid through her first winter but then starting in February she started laying very thin shelled eggs and now hasn’t laid in weeks. She laid a few in off places outside nest box then stopped altogether. The other night I went out late...

    Pullet or cockerel?

My current batch of newbies is a few weeks older, one Rhode Island Red, one Black Australorp and one white Plymouth Rock. The RIR also has a comb slightly pinker than the rest but am fairly certain she is a lady. Not sure if that is a common trait among reds but short version is: looks like all...
