Planning backyard coop on Long Island,NY- advice?

Hi all,
My wife and I recently decided to a install a med size coop in out fenced backyard here on Long Island. We are restricted to 6 chickens as per town code with roosters not allowed. We are thinking that life is not complicated enough now that the kids are on their own LOL and love the idea having fresh eggs available to family and friends. Just purchased the following coop and I plan on building an approx 4'wx8L'x6'H run mad out of treated 2x2s and 1/2" square hardware tach cloth to protect the hens. Also plan on getting nibbler type waterers and compartment type? feeders.

What kind of chicks should we buy? Wife wants social chickens so she can hang out with them when she's mad at me- she's picking out names already. Think she also wants them to be pretty....
I am more practicle in that great egg laying and ability to handle NE winters more of a priority.
Go to local farms? Order online? Retail ie Tractor Supply?
Thanks in advance everyone.

if you live on Long Island - get your chicks from Wayne at Long Island Poultry. Find him on Facebook or Googlemaps.
