Just wanted to tell how my first chicken died yesterday and alert people to be extra cautious in every aspect of their yard to keep their birds safe. I've had this big empty planter sitting on my porch the past few days and yesterday one of my hens must have jumped up onto the edge of it and it...
I'm just kind of curious about the breed mix of this rooster. I got him from an Ameraucana/Easter Egger bin at the feed store with a few others. He had some barring when he was younger. Now it's almost like he's some kind of laced. I've looked at pics online trying to find one that looks like...

I've put the roost bars pretty high up. About 3 feet off the floor. They are about a foot above the nest boxes which have a shelf covering them, Do you think the chickens will have an easy enough time getting up there? First pic is view from where the hens will come in and out. The second is...
@blackdog043 I would use clear vinyl. @eggbert420 here's the two windows and door window I'm wanting to cover. They are small so I feel like wood would be overkill. I would have the covers off when the weather is nice.
I am converting my kids old cabin style playhouse into a coop. I made shutters for the windows that will be access to the nest boxes, but for the other windows I want to put hardware cloth and keep them open air and make some maybe snap on vinyl covers for when it's raining or colder months...
@PD-Riverman OK--- I was going by what you had posted--- """Free range means they can go where they want without being fenced in""" and did not understand how much space it takes for you to consider it free range. But I guess if it's relative terminology, then my 1 acre chickens are free range...
@PD-Riverman So enclosed in a 1 acre yard is not free range, but a 12 acre pasture that is fenced off aswell makes them free range? What amount of space makes them free range?
@PD-Riverman They will be able to get out of the yard if they want and onto the rest of the property. The fence is for keeping the cows out, not the chickens in.
Our chickens will be free range 98% of the time on our 12 acre property inside of a 1 acre yard. But it can rain a lot here in East-Central Texas. I was wanting to build a covered run for them for rainy days to stretch their legs. We have 12 chickens but only 6-8 of them will be using this run...
We got several chicks from a few places around town. We got these 3 from TSC and think they may have been labeled incorrectly. The first two were labeled as Female Black Sex Link(RIR male + PR female). They both have white spots on their heads, so I NOW know they are probably both males. :( The...
