My flock of 3 BR and 2 RIR are 1 year old. Within the last month the RIR have become mean to the BR's not sure if the are going to survive the summer or go to freezer camp.
Boiling point is when a liquid turns into a gas. Freezing point is when a liquid turns into a solid. Vaseline is normally a solid.
I think what the Vaseline does is it keeps the water from contacting the combs.
Dry crumbles free choice, as soon as the grass turns brown they will get fodder daily, they free range for an hour each day and then come in for treats, either BOSS or mealy worms.
Food no, water yes. If something happens and you are not there to let them out in the mornings it is very hard on them. If for no other reason think of water in the coop as a safety measure. You should always have some fresh clean water available at all times.
All of my wheat is molding no matter how much drainage I have. I spread out the seeds as thin as I could without being able to see the bottom.
On day 2 add a half teaspoon of baking soda to a cup of water and let the seeds soak for about 5 minutes. I have not had a mold problem with mine...
Easiest way to keep the water clean is to convert over to chicken nipples. There are lots of post on them. It doesn't take long for the chickens to figure out how to use them.
Hi everybody ! New to BYC but not to chickens. I now have eight 10 week old chicks. 4 barred plymouth rocks and 4 rhode island reds. they were all pullets but now 3 of them have turned into roosters. So I guess we will be having nuggets before to long as we are not allowed roosters in town.
Designing a coop is a big project at least in the mind. In the end its what works for you. My only suggestion is, because the coop will be in the "front" yard, try to make it complement your house so it doesn't look gaudy.
