1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
2 Year old Rhode Island Red. Normal weight.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Found her lying in the mud, not moving. When picked up, she flaps, but can't lift head, stand or move otherwise. Brought her inside and now she is breathing hard, little gurgles occasionally. She make quiet unhappy cries and twitches head if touched. Eyes always closed
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
Less than a day. Has survived 7 hours since found. Seemed perfectly fine yesterday and this morning.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
Not yet, at least.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
Nothing as far as I can tell.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
It has been very rainy lately. While she can choose between the coop and pen, maybe she got chilled? I'm guessing it's some bacterial or viral infection.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Not eating, have tried to give water with a dropper. Have to hold beak open and she may just be letting the water run out rather than swallowing. Crop was full when found.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Unknown. She has not pooped since found.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
None. She's in a cardboard box, gently wrapped in a towel. Propped her head up a bit.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
Home treat. No local vets will see chickens. Honestly, I'm more wondering if she has any chance or if I should give her a kinder quicker death.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
None
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Huge coop with two rooms and separate nest boxes. Elevated perches and a water given via rubber nozzles. Fed non antibiotic feed, and allowed to forage in garden when weather is nice. Cedar shavings in the coop, grass cuttings in the pen. Has 3 roommates she was raised with.
Thank you in advance for all of your help. She's the sweetest chicken we have and I want to help her if possible or at least give her a kind death
