Can someone tell me what breed she is? I found her in my backyard a month ago. She is happily living with my covey of quail (I have 50+ birds that roam about in the bottom of my aviary during the day). She has grown. When we pick up the birds and put them in their respective apts for...
In just the last couple days her tail has become more pronounced. She's so vocal and she trills. My cat is very upset that he can't eat her.
In about 4 weeks I would like to put her in my aviary with my quail, but I keep reading that its a bad idea. I don't want her isolated. Any thoughts?
What is an EE mix? I know next to nothing about chickens. I raise Japanese quail for eggs and as pets. Of course, now that I know my hubby is allergic to the eggs and meat (had one for dinner that broke her neck due to a freak thunder blast) I am seriously considering adding 1 or 2 chickens...
This little guy showed up out of no where in my backyard being chased by my dog and cat. Someone suggested it is a bantam chicken. I have never seen a chicken older than a couple weeks. Who is this?
I have jumbos too. i started them on wire and was dismayed when they started developing bumblefoot. they have lots of options to get off the wire, but that wasn't good enough. I started lining my wire with paper and straw on top and had no new cases pop up.
I soaked their little feet in an...
I finally figured how to candle the eggs. All the eggs from the incubator are so dark no light comes thru them. I know that of all the other eggs I have collected, I can see light thru them. I candled all the eggs that were in the nest and they all showed light. One had been fertile. I could...
Until a couple days ago, all my hens laid their eggs in the communal nest and I see them taking turns checking on the eggs constantly. I am FAR TO NEW at this to expect much. It just seems to me that If the birds are a communal breed then why not a communal nest. We will see.
Today is June 11. Good grief! I let time go by. The days have been scorchers here. I periodically mist the birds to help them with heat. The poor dears have been panting so much. Just a few spray mists. They seem to like it.
I really don't think my incubated eggs are going to hatch. I'm...
Today is another scorcher. Temps have hit 97 with a wee bit of a breeze. My kids have rolled all their eggs out of the bottle nest and are keeping them separated. the poor dears are panting up a storm. They are loving my lightly misting them every now and then. Changed out their hot water...
Last night, after the nightly egg collection, I caught Rudy on the nest again. One of the eggs had been kicked out of the nest. He rolled back in under himself.
They broke one of their nest eggs today and I had to dispose of it. They are still guarding the other 3. At least they are still...
I was wrong. They didn't kick one of the 4 eggs out. Which means I had only 2 eggs laid yesterevening. Today, they waited until afternoon to uncover their 4 eggs from their nest. They kicked 2 of the eggs to the side. About 3 hours later they put all 4 eggs back together. It's hot today, in...
This morning they are still "guarding" their egg nest. The male "Rudy" does a lot of the sitting by the nest. He's stopped bothering the girls so much too. I wonder if they will give me a full complement of eggs tonight or just one or none. I think they are waiting on what will happen with...
My hens and roo kicked one of the eggs out of the nest they made and buried the rest under the straw for the night. I brought that egg in. They usually lay their eggs in the evening. So far, only one other egg was laid today. It was on the other side of the coop. I brought that in too...
Hi everyone! I'm a newbie and I obtained my Jumbo Pharoah Cots on April 15.
I keep seeing info that coturnix quail rarely hatch their own chicks, hence the need for incubators.
I have 5 birds, 4 hens and a rooster that are now 13 weeks old. I am enjoying them so much that, on May 31, I began...
