    Please Help

A video of her trying to walk would be most helpful. At least a picture of her feet from all sides.

    Introducting ducklings to drake

He's only heard them. They're in with 4 poults so I've been leery about letting him in with them. I got them from a local big box store on the cheap bc they weren't cute little fluffballs any more so I don't really know how old they are but one is beginning to quack. I will take your advice and...

    Introducting ducklings to drake

I have 2 ducklings, hopefully females, that are about a month old that I want to introduce to my year old drake. He knows they are there and tries to get into their enclosure in the garage when he comes in at night. He lost his friend, also a drake, several months ago and he is very lonely. My...

Have you checked her vent to see if it's clear of feces buildup and around her pelvic area to see if she's eggbound?

Need hatchet help, please don't judge.

A quick update. The hatchet wasn't nearly sharp enough. The cleaver was useless - didn't even bother with it. Tried the broomstick method and broke the stick. Finally used a swift knife to the jugular and that did the work. Btw, didn't do all that on one bird so there wasn't undue suffering...

Need hatchet help, please don't judge.

Great ideas, thank you. Tried it out on an old garden hose and it worked. The cleaver is a heavy duty 8 inch old-style that I've used for ages. Now I just have to get up the inner fortitude and do it. Thanks.

Need hatchet help, please don't judge.

I know this is an old thread but hopefully someone will have an answer for this: is there a way to test a hatchet or cleaver to make sure it will cut through the feathers and tissue before doing the actual deed? I have a couple boys that have to go and they're Brahmas about 9 months and I want...

    Show me your dust baths

Nice. My dream is to have a contained area just for dust bathing that protects from rain, snow, and sleet. Maybe this summer I can get something made.

    Show me your dust baths

Good to know. Thanks. I've been using animal grade but it's quite coarse. I've used food grade for flea hot spots in the house which works nicely. Big difference between them

    Show me your dust baths

Pretty good ideas. Thank you all so much. I might try to make at least 1 covered bath if we ever get temps above freezing again in my lifetime. You all rock! Appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

    Show me your dust baths

Hello all. I'm needing a way to keep my girls and Mr. Wattles dust baths from the elements. I've tried a few different designs but nothing works too well. Either they can't stretch all out or the rain and snow ruin the mix. (I use DE, premethrim (might not have spelled that right), ash from my...

    Baby chicks failing to thrive??

Me too. Bloody poop can mean a lot of things: worms, infection, etc. If more than 2 of them are bleeding I'd be tempted to take a couple samples to the vet for analysis. If you bought these from a breeder or online hatchery you should get in touch with them to see what they recommend. If they're...

    Baby chicks failing to thrive??

Thanks for the pics. Definitely pasty butt on the last one. Not sure about the eye problem, I've never had that with any of mine. But the other pics show feathered and active peepers and they look really healthy to me. Not sure why the size discrepancy between them but they simply may have...

    Baby chicks failing to thrive??

Would you please post pics? Makes it easier to visualize what each chick is going through. It sounds like you've got several issues at once. The first thing I would do is replace the shavings with dried all purpose sand. Pine can trigger breathing problems. The only thing I put in the water for...

Looking for a few broadbreasted female bronze turkeys.

Got my birds from local grain mill this past spring: 3 toms, 1 hen. Toms were delicious and Matilda is now my official pet. I just love her and so do my neighbors. I'm looking for a heritage Bourbon Red now.

Swollen hen foot, need treatment advice

Hopefully the leg will heal correctly and that all goes well. I'd like to address the shaking head and walking backwards since no one else has mentioned this. Please check her ears for ear mites as long as she's laid up and you have easy access. They are miserable for an animal.

How do I know if my chick dying?

I'm sorry you have to go through this process. It's a hard lesson we have all learned one way or another. It's possible that the chick was sick when you bought it. I've gotten chicks from very reliable sources and they still ended up with pasty butt and other problems. Now that you are better...
