Watch them on a weekend day. Or maybe I should say listen to them. When one lays an egg she will announce it to the world. Try to see where she is when she starts squawking. She will be fairly close to where she lay her egg. That will give you a general area to start looking. HOwever with...
I set 12 eggs before the hurricane on the east coast. The humidity was constant at 25-30%. Even in a room where the huidity was 55-58%. I read on here somewhere that the humidity reader was not on the probe (which suprised me. duh) so I put the hole on the "reader" over a hole on the...
When I was growing up our chickens prefered to sleep in the trees beside the chicken house. It did not matter if it was raining/sleeting/snowing/blowing whatever they prefered the tree. We usually let them until a coon or something would get them at night. Then we would lure them into the...
Try putting an egg where everyone can see it. In the middle of the henhouse floor or in the run. Everyone will probably run over and give an experimental peck. The egg eater will make a determined try at breaking the eggshell. It will be easy to tell who is trying to break the shell. If...
Sometimes it depends on the hen whether they will accept new babies or not. Soem have an internal clock and some don't. Some will accept new babies at any time and some will not. I have had hens not accept any new baby (even slipped in at night). How they knew the difference is beyond me. I...
I have a 2 year old Bantam Sultan hen that has spurs. How common is this and will it be a disqualification if I show her? Will she pass this on to her babies?
I have rabbits in cages with 1x2 inch wire on sides and top. Bottom wire is smaller holes. The cages are suspended from the barn rafters by chains in 10 foot sections. 5 cages in a section. This evening I found a second baby rabbit dead and eaten in the cage next to the cage he was supposed to...
I know this is not the rabbit section but not many people go there and I really need an answer. I have been having problems for a while getting my rabbits to breed. Well maybe I should say "to multiply". they breed just fine. however I don't seem to get many babies. And some of the babies I...
My well fed, well cared for dog still kills my chickens when they happen to get out of their yard. She is a Border collie mix and anything that moves she instantly goes after. Whether it is a cat, goat or chicken if it runs she is after it. The cats have learned if they do not run she gets...
What kind of predator would eat the feet/legs off of baby rabbits? I have been raising rabbits here for 10 years and lately I have been finding baby rabbits in the cage dead with their feet eaten. That is all. Just the feet.
I think the mad cow disease was spread to healthy cows by feeding an already sick cow back to healthy cows. Cows were not created to be meat eaters (unless you count the ocassional catapillar or grasshopper) like chickens are. Show a cow a chunk of meat and the best they will do is maybe smell...
I use rabbit nipples for my chickens. They work just fine. The best way to "train" your chicken to drink from them is to adjust the nipple to drip very slowly (unscrew the nipple just the tinyest bit) and the chickens will quickly learn how to get water out.
Tonight when I was finishing feeding I happened to look across the horse pasture and noticed eye shine in a tree. I went to get a closer look expecting a raccoon but instead it was a fox!!!!! It was at least 15-20 feet up in the tree. What the heck????? It was not the least bit nervous with...
It is illegal to trap and relocate most animals. Relocate being the important word. Using corn for bait is very effective for squirrels. If possible can you feed your chickens 2-3 times a day only the amount they can clean up. That way you can keep your chickens full without leaving food out...
If you want to "Go Green" just put a few small fish (guppies work well) in the water container and let them eat the mosquitoe larva. That is what I do and it works great. I have some in my goats water bucket and the horse trough.
I think putting them outside now would probably be a death sentence. They do not have a winter coat since they have been inside all winter with heat and an artifical lights making their systems think it is summer. Unless you live in southern Florida it would be best to leave them inside until...
