I don’t have ducks yet, and I’ve been doing a little reading and asking around to prep myself. One person whose yard I saw had a small (think small kiddy pool) repurposed fountain for her 3 ducks. I asked how she kept it clean, and she said it was easy - she had a hose that would refill the...
Loved the experiment, and can’t wait to see what happens with egg #2! It’s only 102 F here, but I might recreate this experiment next 110+ heat wave we get. You know, for science.
Update: I logged into my account on McMurray’s to double check something else and looked at my order history. I had ordered a Lakenvelder but the quantity was listed as 0 and then a Phoenix was added to my order. So the answer was there all along - they had substituted a silver Phoenix in. I had...
Whoa! My stunted ones are from 4 different breeds and had a lot of trauma with all the pecking, so I’m not blaming McMurray for this. I wonder what happened with your chick?
OEGBs are bantams right? I really don’t think she’s a bantam. She was the same size as everyone else at the beginning, where previous bantams I’ve raised were obviously smaller, and feathered out about the same rate.
I’m seeing pictures of silver phoenix and silver duckwing phoenix chicks...
Oh and legs are pink with a slight gray? You can see them clearly in this photo from June 13:
(Yes, she did get her toe pecked off and it’s a bloody stump. 😭)
No, even if she were a bantam, she should be farther along with feather development and she was the same size as everyone else initially. I have 4 who have this stunted growth in this batch; never seen it before. 😞 Check out the size difference on these two:
Photos were taken last week on...
I’ve been watching this chick growing up and I’m now certain that she’s not any of the several breeds I purchased from McMurray’s. We had 1 extra in the order, so that must be her. Here are fresh pictures. She is about 7.5 weeks old, but is among 4 who are very developmentally stunted. I believe...
What a generous offer! It's had to pick one best thing from what's described - the long warranty period is impressive considering that there's so much cheap garbage being sold these days, the resistance to red mites is a huge bonus (dealt with stick fleas in my wooden coop once before, that was...
Also her feet are a little scabby due to two chicks who used to incessantly grab at others’ feet. One of them mostly stopped after spending time in chicken jail, and the other died.
5 weeks old, being raised in a large metal tub, on tiny wood shavings, with 19 other chicks - see attached photo for the set up, minus half the chicks and the warming plate.
I noticed a while ago that she was not growing larger at the same rate as most of the other, but there are two other...
Thank you both! I didn't have time to tend to her today, but I will rinse her eye and put Neosporin on the spot tomorrow. I hadn't noticed the red spot on the corner of her eye before, but it looks super obvious when viewing the big photos on my computer! And I will listen to her breathing.
Chick is 3 weeks old. Being raised in a metal tub with shavings with 19 other chicks. 2 of those chicks have had issues with pecking others, but I’ve only seen them peck/grab feet and toes so far. The left side of her face is affected but the right looks normal. The thing stuck to the surface of...
That’s a shame! I eat them all (just had been removing the meat spots). Although my dogs are happy to get the random raw egg if I didn’t want one for whatever reason. 🙂
