    Easter Egger pullet or cockerel

I would guess pullet. By this age you should see a more red comb with 3 rows on a cockerel.

My first try with the incubator

The hatch is going very good. So far 12 of 25 are out of their shells. One isn't right, but I'm going to wait until the hatch is over to see if you guys can diagnose the issue. She can't seem to use her legs and just flips over backwards. She's one of the more beautiful chicks, so I would hate...

My first try with the incubator

Here is a picture of chicks one and two. Perhaps my wife will keep sending me pictures as they hatch.

My first try with the incubator

Thank you abraga. The first chick out was a barred rock. Only one sedans egg made it to lockdown, and it has yet to pip. I had to go to work, but surely I will have an update when I get home this evening. When I left there were 5 external pips (3 barred rocks, 1 bantam Easter egger, and 1 gold...

My first try with the incubator

Our first chick has arrived! This was the second to externally pip. There are currently 2 pips and 1 chick. The incubator is doing an excellent job of keeping temps and humidity. The only thing I've encountered that's troubling is the fact that I can't seem to keep the cat from trying to get...

My first try with the incubator

Our first pip is visible! It's a day or two earlier than expected, so part of me hopes this one is slow to hatch. However, it was summer when these eggs were collected, and maybe, just maybe they started to develop before hitting the incubator. I guess I'll know once I meet this little barred...

    Need help identifying the breed..

These look like my feed store quality birds. I don't show, so my feed store birds work great. You can't eat those awards anyway, and all eggs taste great! I'd say you got one heck of a deal!

    Need help identifying the breed..

Also, I think they're all pullets at about 18 weeks old. A few more weeks (4-6) and they should be laying.

    Need help identifying the breed..

She's definitely a mix. The bluish legs, pea comb and colors make me think Easter Egger, but I don't think you're going to get blue eggs from her with that much yellow in her legs.

Whatcha doin' with all those eggs?

At our house most eggs get boiled for deviled eggs. My kids could eat eat a dozen a day. Of course on the weekend I like to make sunny-side up eggs. I could eat 5 or 6 myself, but usually I guilt myself into stopping at about 4.

April 2017 chicks, who will lay first contest...

We got 4 eggs today. 2 from leghorns and 2 from RIRs. That would indicate that our other RIR still hasn't started. We're also impatiently waiting for eggs from 2 EEs, 1 barred rock, and one buff brahma. I'm guessing our brahma is a long way from laying, but the EEs look like they're getting...

My first try with the incubator

Thank you for the continued advice Alley. I've read a lot of mixed things about bantams, so I thought I would go earlier than later. Is there a sure fire way to know when to start lockdown? I don't want to rush it if it isn't needed. I certainly don't want to drown or endanger the hatch by...

My first try with the incubator

Also, 2 of the eggs that I removed had floating, detached air cells. I considered them as scrambled in the shell from the shipping process.

My first try with the incubator

Well, we are over one week in the incubator now. I've got the humidity around 30%. At 7 days I removed a few infertile eggs (including my test egg #37). All other eggs seem to be progressing nicely. There are 31 eggs still cooking. The the seramas didn't seem to do nearly as well as the others...

    Here we go...

If those are the ones that just came in the mail, then you may consider leaving your turner off for 24-48 hours in order to let the air cell rest. I got impatient on my shipped eggs and didn't let them rest as long as I should have. I made lots of excuses to go ahead and get them in the...

    I have an EMERGENCY

I would go to Tractor Supply or your local feed store and get a Hovabator or Little Giant incubator. You can also post on Craigslist to see if anyone local can hatch them for you. There is a LOT of information about hatching on this website. Read Hatching Eggs 101...

Anyone doctored a chicken taken by a coyote?

Birds will often kill the weak. They may be your biggest threat. Keep her separated in a clean pen or crate while she heals. You'll need to watch for maggots this time of year if the wound is open. Here's to hoping for a quick recovery for your hen.
