Hey folks - need some advice on the guy in the picture. His left foot is missing 2 toenails & has been for probably 6 weeks or so. He gets around ok for the most part but there is a noticeable limp (sometimes more pronounced, sometimes barely noticeable). I confined him for 3 days (Fri~Sun)...
Hey folks - have a 3 day old chick that I hatched that has just stated to limp and favor it’s right leg. There are 3 other roommates in the brooder with it. It treats the leg as I would equate a human treating a badly sprained ankle. Diet is starter chick feed - my wife supplemented it last...
Ok folks - I need help. I received the enclosed bird as an extra “freebie” on my last order from Ideal. Ideal has no record of sending me a 19th bird but this is the extra one. The tail is looking roosterish but since I have no Roos I’m not sure. The breed is a mystery also as this one is...
Exactly the same for me. I put the new girls in a tractor so that they can see & be seen but no injuries. After about 6 weeks old I start to let the young girls out, an hour before sunset at first (supervised) then 2 hours, and so on. Eventually they free range in their own gangs but as they...
Hello all - as a nerdy chicken farmer I created an Excel file to track my girls...If you're interested you can take a peek at the attached image. To define some columns: 1). The "sigma" symbol is the total qty of eggs each girl has laid 2). "TDL" = Total Days Laying = the number of days...
I have 2 of these - I'll try to post a pic later (it's been giving me issues lately). You can assemble them in about an hour - super super easy. They are very well-protected and solid against predators - I don't worry about a thing with them. There are 3 roosting bars inside - one nitpick...
I have a 13 month old Leghorn - she took 2 months off for a hard moult from late Nov to late Jan. After that, she has laid EVERY DAY for 65 consecutive days (as of 4/4). They forage well and are higher up the pecking order than I would expect given their small size. Egg laying song is usually...
I have 2 Buffs in a mixed flock of (currently) 17 hens. The 2 buffs are a different & interesting personality from the others. They are very calm, rarely getting into any squabbles with other girls. They are very curious - they are the 1st to approach when I sit down and they want to know if...
Very very interesting breed. Currently we have 1 adult hen - egg production is better than I expected - she’s laying about 5.5 eggs per week. We have 1 chick that we just received and have 2 more on order in April. The first one (Hattie, short for the female pharaoh Hatchepsut) is so...
I think you’re right. It’s very odd - had a White Rock & Leghorn - can easily tell them apart already. Same for Barred Rock & Dominique - can easily tell them apart. But I’ve really been struggling with these 3 ladies, especially when supposedly one of them is a Golden Comet!
Exactly right. I have a Leghorn that does this occasionally also. I’ve confirmed your thought this week - sometimes she just jumps the gun and the egg sticks. Becomes a “floor egg” but really isn’t that originally
Lol -I’m sorry, was afraid of that. They get to free range for a couple hours before sunset. I’ll get the wife (aka: the Boss) to help me get a good pic of each of the 3 still in question. You guys have confirmed what I thought about the Welsummer & Buckeye - thanks much for that. I’ll post...
Ok so..neither of the birds is the Buttercup then, it’s the left-hand bird beside the pan, right? I’ll attach another pic of her below to clarify. So - regarding the 2 pics above - one of them is the campine. What is the other (very similar) bird then? I think what’s clear is that I did not...
