Soo basically get the highest protein feed that I can get a hold of... .Got it... Also my WONDERFUL father offered to help with building raised, sheltered caging for them!! YAY!!
Cool...
Is the 28% feed for chicks or is that good for all ages? I've found everything from using regular chicken feed to using special gamebird or 24-26% feeds throughout life.
These guys will be for meat and eggs so I'll need something to feed them long-term.
Soo after looking more (I'm impatient and posted before I did all my research...) I like the idea of wire cages raised up off the ground but I'm not sure if the quail will be protected enough... we get a LOT of snow and COLD!! How much protection do the little critters need? Perhaps not as much...
Hey All!!
I'm considering raising some Coturnix quail this spring and I'm starting to put together some information about how to keep and raise them.
Everything that I've found so far says that they have to be raised in a covered pen (which makes sense) and they need a higher protein feed but...
I shoot bb guns and airsoft guns in my yard and when I processed a couple of my chickens I found some of the metal bbs and some of the plastic ones in their gizzards. I'm sure that the hens have also eaten some of the bbs but they haven't had any problems!!
ooh, that's a good idea.... I don't use kitty litter but I'm sure I can find something similar....
What are peoples thoughts on having the bottom of the nest box wire.... Then it would be covered with shavings/hay or something but I was thinking it would be easier to clean that way....
OK, thank you very much!! I guess I'll up my plan to the 6 nest boxes then!! That'll fit nicely along one wall of the coop.... How high should they be off the floor?? I was planning on about 2 feet? High enough for chickens to go under them but low enough that they can just jump up in....
Hey All!
I'm working on plans for my chicken coop and I'm hoping that my hens will start laying soon (they are about 5 and a half months now) so I'm thinking I want to put in some nest boxes....
My question is... how big do the boxes need to be??? These are standard sized chickens. I'm not...
LOL Yeah, it's definitely gonna be a big step out of my comfort zone!! I do hunt and gut my own kills but I haven't killed MY OWN animals yet!!
It'll be OK though. I've got till next Saturday now since I just realized that we were having a party today... So I'll still be thinking about what...
hmmm.... didn't think of that...
How about rose bush trimmers?? Should work yes? They cut through rose stems well, those must be at least as hard as a chicken neck right?
Hey All!!
I've got 2 Cornish X that are just about ready for freezer camp... I'm thinking next Saturday. Sooo, I don't have killing cones so I was considering just hanging the chickens up by their little feets on the clothesline pole and slitting their throats...
Is this a good idea(ie - is...
Hey All!
I just got a FREE incubator with an egg turner in it and I was wondering how I should test it to make sure it's gonna work? I don't have eggs just yet but I'd like to figure out whether or not it'll actually work and hatch out eggs!!
Should I just throw a thermometer in it and see if...
I introduced my dog to my chicks (he's a border collie/great pyranees/lab/german shepherd so he's got some bird dog instincts and some "protect them all" instincts). Soooo long story short... the chicks (now 2 and 5 weeks old) are his babies now. He's actually gone so far as to growl at the...
Hey All!!
I'm gonna get some more hens, and I'd like to know how many hens a rooster can service?
I'm considering getting 15 barred rock hens and 15 buff orpington hens would 1 rooster be able to service them? Or should I get a couple and separate the two types?
Thanks!!
Lauren
Hello!! I was thinking about trying to raise a sustainable(ish) flock that would be good for both meat and eggs. But, on one hand, I don't want to take forever to raise the meat birds, on the other hand I want something that's better than Cornish Xs (don't really wanna have to repurchase EVERY...
