The story of my chicks, from the hatchery to home and beyond!
I place an online order through Ideal on 2/19/10. The ship date is set for March 10th, so i'm expecting the chicks by this Friday March 12th.
I ordered the following:
3- Dominiques
3 Gold penciled Hamburgs...
About me:
We live in California right on the coast. . I have a Wife, two kids and two dogs. And one helluva small back yard. Most people think I'm crazy when I tell them about my plan to raise chickens for farm fresh eggs right from my very own extremely suburbanite neighborhood and cramped...
My chicken situation is tricky. My home has an extremely small back yard(almost patio like) and is sandwiched between two other houses. My backyard is about 35x16. I got about 9 feet between our house and the houses on either side of me. I figured it would be a challenge and i'm always up for a...

The feeder extends up the the second floor via a hole I cut out in the floor. I open the door to the second story, remove the lid and refill as neccessary...seems to be working out good!
The cylinder is black pvc pipe in the largest diameter that home depot carries. They sell yellow...
Yes, I made the feeder. I actually made two but haven't installed the second one yet. Not sure if i need it depending on how long this one last in between re-fills.
I framed up a rectangle using 2x3's and put chicken wire across the top and grew organic grass through it, so the chickens can...
The dogs would love one of these girls to fly the coop.
A couple weeks ago during a "field trip" to the garden the Pointer sucked one of the hens through the fence. Hens were about 4 weeks old and much smaller when this happened. luckily it being bird dog = soft mouth. I rescued the chicken...
Yeah I load the feeder from the "second story". Kinda nice so I don't have to bend down and break my back trying to re-fill it. They sell a lid that actually fits down flush so the chickens can't pull it off. They don't seem to pay any attention to it anyways.
I have also built a watering...
The chicks are fully feathered and I want my garage back so it was time to lug the coop and chicks to there final resting place.
Originally I was planning on placing the coop outside the run and using the side door I built to give the chickens access to the run, but after
seeing how much...
I was kind of thinking that. Hey, if it doubles as something fun for them to do I guess it all works out in the end. I'll find out in a few weeks when they are
fully feathered.
I too am now using my old garden area as my new chicken run, so I hung a few tops turvy's over my run just to grow a few things
no seriously....
It's kind of limited to a few different plants but what the heck. Better than nothing and it keeps your plants off the ground!
update on the peanuts:
As soon as the geniuses on this forum identified the breed I was able to list them on craigslist.
POOF! There off to their new home. A very nice lady came and picked them up, all 7 for 10 bucks.
Nearly cut my flock in half! Those guys were so big they were definitely...

Ha funny, I called Ideal yesterday and cancelled the re-shipment. Interesting how they just take your word for everything. Anyways, the sole reason for the call was to cancel the order...she ends up asking me about how the chicks were and I told her about the two I lost. She insists on...

First just through the brooder. I let the dogs smell around the brooder and look in. They were pretty calm considering they are...

I was wrong the packing peanuts do have fury legs(just didn't notice) so I'm pretty sure they are Light Brahmas.
Still open to suggestions though because I found some pics of Light Brahma chicks on...
