    Muscovie eye crusting over

I think she needs more duck friends to protect her. Can she be brought inside or isolated until her eye heals? I would say getting a drake, as well, to help out but drakes and chickens are a dangerous combo, so I’ve been told. I wish I had more advice about what the cause of the crusty eye was...

    Duck egg colours.

My Cayugas have laid varying egg colors throughout the season. In the spring they start out having a black coating, then they are olive green, and by winter a paler green. My bufffs always lay cream colored eggs but the size varies.

Here’s what Is it possible that my ladies have a special friend visiting them? I have two that are too young to lay until midsummer. I guess it’s possible that one of them could be a secret boy. No curly tail or penis sighting yet, though. They all have girl voices but my Cayugas are all...

    Mystery fertilizer

I cracked 4 more and they all had more faint discs than the first one. This picture is of the most defined of the recently cracked but looks similar. (Probably wouldn’t have posted about this one) The egg that prompted the post had a very defined larger disc and an obvious circle around it.

The disc had a circle around it. As I’ve been informed by another poster, it might not be a fertilized egg after all. Pics to follow!

    Mystery fertilizer

Thanks! I did eat it. I’ll check out another and post a pic. We had a drake last year who was taken by a fox or coyote. I was under the impression that the eggs with the bullseye/halo were fertilized and the ones with a less obvious dot/disc were not. Pictures to follow!

    Mystery fertilizer

Hi! I just cracked my first duck egg of the spring and found the little white dot with a halo. I only have 5 hens and have seen no wild ducks about. How is this egg fertilized? Have I been misinformed about the dot? Thanks! I’m mystified...

    Egg Frustration

A lot of my confusion comes from the fact that even the first morning with my two new girls I was getting one egg and now zero. I assume my Cayuga will pick up laying when she is re-feathered. Is it possible that the other(new) two buffs are beginning a molt? I have noticed more feathers laying...

    Egg Frustration

Are some breeds seasonal and others lay all season? Mine were laying in some pretty frigid weather at the beginning of the year but those were all Cayugas. Are my new buffs more seasonal?

    Help! Boy or Girl?

My boy “peeped” long after my girls started making a more pronounced quacking sound.

    Egg Frustration

I feed them a layer feed and they free range in a fenced yard all day. They get bugs, worms, grass, weeds, and we give them veggies, herbs, or peas most days.

    Egg Frustration

I have one molting Cayuga, so I don’t expect her to lay for a bit. I also have two buffs who have stopped laying eggs for no apparent reason. I got the two buffs two weeks ago. They are 2 yrs old, healthy and although not prolific layers I was getting at least one egg per day between the 3 of...

    Panting duck

just got two new buffs to keep my newly orphaned Cayuga company. One of them has been sitting most of the day panting. Is she sick?

    Depressed Duck

No injuries, she’s just freaked out. She spent all morning calling for her sister. I’ll see if I can find her a friend on Craigslist. We will have ducklings in September, but we could fit another duck in the meantime.

    Depressed Duck

Due to two separate predator attacks I’m down to one very sad duck. She is sitting in her coop and not eating. I got her at about 6 weeks old so she didn’t imprint on me, just her duck family. We won’t be able to get more ducks for quite some time. Any tips on how to help her meanwhile? :(

Duck Attack, No More Eggs, Molting?

This is my first year raising ducks. I started out with four cayugas, 3 ducks and 1 drake. Last month we lost two to a coyote or neighborhood dogs. We found one dead and one had been carried away, we never found him. We had eggs for another three weeks, but we have had no eggs from the remaining...

    Icey Cayugas

Thank you! I think it just startled me at first. Especially against those black feathers, the white icicles made them look frozen! I do give them a tub that gets refilled morning and afternoon of water deep enough to submerge their heads. I’m always amazed that they still love frigid water...

    Icey Cayugas

I’ve noticed that they get weird if they can’t at least sit in the water. I used to have a “head dunking” set up but they wouldn’t drink from it. Thanks for answering!
