    Abandoned rooster ID

I will ask around. He used to wander with a flock of hens. I am guessing the neighbors behind me have moved and couldn't wrangle him, because the flock is gone and it has been just him for a few days.

    Abandoned rooster ID

I am thinking an american game too. Anybody had experience with them? Like I said, he is pretty chill so far, but he is also pretty small. About the same size as my bigger Ameraucana hen. Maybe still young?

    Abandoned rooster ID

Hi folks, I have an abandoned neighborhood rooster that wandered into my yard and seems to have decided that this is home now. Any ideas on what kind of roo he is? He seems very polite with the girls and very vigilant already. Also very calm around me and seems like he would eat from my hand if...

Friendliest Hard Feather or Light Breeds for Backyard

Hi Folks! I started out my first flock with big fluffy chickens I figured would be less able to hop my backyard fence (Wyandottes and EasterEggers) but recently took a chance with some Seabrights who are really good flyers (one got scared the other day and shot up onto the roof). So far, even...

Making Yourself the Alpha Rooster in a Mixed Flock

Oof. Yowza... ok. I am just taking the advice of a rooster rehabilitator and roo flock owner. I am not shutting him up all the time; I am not allowing him to crow at me like an intruder. I also hand feed him, tell him he's a handsome boy, let him sit with me while the chickens snuggle (he was...

Making Yourself the Alpha Rooster in a Mixed Flock

Hi everybody! I have my first roo, the ever fashionable Mr. Fox, a polish. I raised him from day 1 and he is finally past his awkward phase and looking gorgeous. I have read horror stories about aggressive roos so I have started, since he first started mounting behavior, to establish myself...

Young Flock and Old Flock Sloooooooowly Integrating

Hi folks! My first flock of four shrunk down to two, so I got four chicks to beef back up the numbers. The chicks are fairly close to adult size now and have been outside with the other two girls for a few weeks. At first, they spend all of their time on complete opposite sides of the yard and...

What gender do y'all think these 2 are?

The white one looks like a cockerel. Hard to tell on the second one. If I could see the tail feathers better, that would help. Boys tend to have pointed tail feathers and the start of sickle feathers on their saddle. Girls tend to have pretty rounded tail feathers.

Does anyone know what these two chicken breeds are?

    Buff Orpington and Australorp.

How tall to Polish Roosters get?

Most people don't... but I am curious, haha. Adult weight only really gives you a small picture of what is to come :P

    Dead hen; opinions needed

I thought that might be what it is. Sorry you lost your little lady :/

How tall to Polish Roosters get?

Hi Folks! This is my polish cockerel, Mr. Fox (He used to be Foxy Cleopatra until I found out he was a cockerel, not a pullet). I know that polish are usually smaller breeds and based on what I have read, he should be about the same weight as my large breed hens but I am guessing he will be a...

My Alpha Hen is the most submissive to me... is this normal?

Yup, exactly! What is funny is that it is only the alpha hen that does that... none of the rest.

    Permaculture and Chickens... Yay!

That sounds awesome! My chickens have settled in a tree and I have decided to put my compost pile right underneath! It should make for some good fertilizer. In my climate, hugelkultur beds have not been particularly effective. They tend to just end up being big gopher and mouse havens in my...

My Alpha Hen is the most submissive to me... is this normal?

Hi Folks! I am about a year and a half into my chickenkeeping journey and I have noticed that my dominant hen is also the most submissive to me. She is the definite leader of the pack... mounting the other hens and even attempting to crow here and there. But whenever I come into the backyard...

    Permaculture and Chickens... Yay!

Hi Folks! I am an amateur permaculture gardener and newbie chicken lover from Fresno, CA. Here is my intro... (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I got my first chickens about a year ago after I settled in to my new house. I have since got a few more since a few died...
