I did hatch a black cuckoo split chick last hatch. We were planning on keeping it if it is a girl for my OE pen, but I will let you know if more hatch this batch too! Then you can save a step!
Also, if anyone is interested, I have a few chicks left from my last hatch that are available! A lav Amer, a black split to lav Amer, and two black EEs (also split to lav) :)
I would love some blacks from you at some point! I have 10 lav amers and lav cuckoo amers due this week also. Plus EEs and some Bantam NN! I can’t wait for the bantam NNs! :love
I know hatchery birds are no where near the quality of breeder birds....BUT I was thinking of picking up a Welsummer or two, or possibly a Barnvelder from my local feed store who buys from Ideal to add to our layer flock. My husband really likes the looks of them, but I am hoping they at least...
Well just wanted to update....is is REALLY looking like a roo now :( Comb has reddened a bit, but it has gotten some tell-tale red feathers on it’s shoulders now. Thanks for all the girly thoughts! Of course out of my two Marans chicks that are a bit younger, are both looking rather boyish too...
Thanks everyone! It’s always the favorites that scare you! Keeping my fingers crossed for a girl, but at least the Wheaton-ish looking one who is my sons favorite is a girl worst case.
Thanks for the input. Trying to not get too attached, but of course this is my favorite one lol. They will be 7 weeks on Sat. Usually it is easy for me to tell with my Ameraucanas by now but these guys are a bit tougher!
Ok this one is stumping me....body says girl, but comb is really throwing me. I have one deff roo, and two deff pullets, but what do you think? It is splash with no color leakage (yet at least). The one in question is the splash in the single comb pic, and the bottom left of the collage. Bottom...
My favorites as far as great layers and awesome temperaments are:
Buff Orpingtons (not English, but hatchery type)
Barred Rocks (same with the hatchery stock as above)
Naked Necks - I know they look odd, but my NN are by far the most outgoing and lay HUGE eggs frequenly.
Well the flu hit out family this week...NOT fun. I did manage to set some eggs set though, so hopefully will have some cute fluff butts in a couple of weeks! :) My last hatch was a mess. Only ended up hatching two BCMs and one Amer from shipped eggs which was a bummer. Hoping this hatch goes way...
Well after a horrible hatch (shipped eggs), I am finally getting enough eggs to set some of my own! I am going to set 16 (+ whatever I get today and tomorrow) Ameraucana eggs. I have the Lav Cuckoo roo in my profile pic over two lav hens, a blue split to lav (don’t usually have her in the pen)...
My other option is to double the run size, but then I am no sure how we could cover the whole run due to tress. HMMMM glad I have a few months to plan.
LOVE this! 16x8 was actually exactally what I was thinking of for the run since all of our fence posts are spaced 8’ on our property. Do you prefer the raised house rather than at ground level? I like that it gives them a space to go under, but always hear ducks aren’t the greatest with ramps.
The only requirement based on our sized property is that no housing or runs closer than 100ft to our property line so we are good there :) Thanks for the help!
It did, it was Duck house/run size, but I edited it to prevent confusion. My original post is the same, but guess I should have left house out of the title, b/c everyone honed in on that even though the run size and footing were my main questions. Sorry for the confusion. From now on I will just...
Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I have searched and in my post you can see I have read about the size of the house/coop, but was more interested in the size run, which there does not seem to be a rule of thumb for, at least that I have found. As far as the footing goes, I was kind of wondering what...
