After studying the post on this forum I decided against using the “Chicken Wire” for my run and went with the Hardware Cloth. Best decision ever! Has turned away squirrels, raccoons, crows, hawks, dogs and most recently a coyote. Most of these attempts on my hens were caught on a game camera but...
The power company comes around routinely and trims back overhanging limbs along their right of way and chip up the limbs. I stopped and ask them what they do with the truck load of chips. They were eager to dump a whole load near my coop and run so they didn't have to haul them across town to...
Actually the breeder, once he saw the pic, said that one might be older but he would trade it out. Not wanting to make the hour plus drive back to his farm I told him I would keep it as long as it was a hen. Today the hen in question layed an egg. Guess it's really a hen!
I truly have read and...
I picked up a couple RIR hens from a breeder the other day and when I got home I noticed one had 1 1/2 inch spurs. These pullers are 5-6 months old and look identical besides the spur on the one. Sent a picture to breeder and he assured me it was a hen. He was willing to trade it out if I wanted...
I now have my coop and run completed and looking to meet up with a breeder that will sell me 5-8 month old pullers. I only have room for 6 birds so I'm needing to be selective in my choices of breed.
I'm wanting birds that produce many eggs.
Would like a variety of egg colors.
Must be docile...
I've looked around the forum but still not sure where to ask this question so here goes.
Where can I find out about the Deep Litter Method?
I searched using that title and onLt found post discussing various aspects of the method. So what is it, how do I do it, what's involved?
I have a 4x4...
Keep in mind with the poly coragation roof, t hat a falling tree limb of any size is more likely going to puncture it. Had a small deck cover built out of it and many trees with rooting limbs falling.
I've built many deer stands using metal roofs. These are generally well ventilated, open windows, and with just a person setting in them you will get condensation dripping. My fix has been to attach 1 inch styrofoam under metal which has been pointed out, the chickens will peck. I'm presently...
Thanks all for the welcome and information.
I planned the coop high to avoid the bending over, bad back. The more I read into this forum the more excited I am to finish the coop and run and get some hens.:wee
Since joining this forum I've read and read and read and came to the conclusion that you folks really enjoy this chicken farming OR your just crazy! :lau
Regardless, I think I'll fit right in! :thumbsup
Now for my second and third question since joining. I'm building a 4'x4' coop that will set...
Thanks for the welcomes and it seems there are some that are concerned about having a run that is predator proof. I'm thinking I'll make sections with hardware cloth that I can link together and cover the area to guard against diggers. I'll also cover the top of the run cause we have lots of Hawks.
Hello from a newbie. I'm so new that at this point I have zero chickens. My title on this thread relates to the fact that I have LOTS of questions.
I'm retired and have been kicking around raising some chickens for the eggs and hopeing to get a docile breed that my grandkids can safely be...
