I wondered about that. Her wattle and comb growth and brightness happened in a matter of days. I wasn't expecting eggs for another month or so but perhaps their body starts changing quicker than that. I've still had them on starter feed but maybe I need to start moving them to layer feed.
One of my buff ladies? is changing quickly and although I don't mind either way, I was wondering if I have a rooster. In the first pic, she's on the right and in the last picture she's in the middle.
They are 17 weeks old.
Yes, I know. I let them out this evening for a bit. The three that get out all the time were already out. I made a couple of trips from the house to the coop and saw a hawk fly over to a tree in the field not too far away so I made the girls go back in.
Thank you all! I did keep the chickens in their run today, although a few of them can fly out. They all made it through the day, though. I will do some more work on their run area to try to keep them in and hope the raptor moves on.
I lost a chicken yesterday, in the evening right by our deck. Our door is maybe 20 feet from where something came out from under the deck and tore her up. All the other chickens were close my. It was during the daylight and we had our small dogs in and out several times while the chickens were...
I was lucky for several broody girls but finally got Jezabell doing the broody thing. She is an ornery barred rock who is the smallest of my flock but the most daring. She would not break with the ice packs after a week so I have her in a 24"x18" crate with hardware cloth on the bottom, up on...
This looks very doable! Thanks a bunch! When I went to let the crew out this morning, she was in the nest NEXT to the one she had been sitting in, which had the two melted ice packs I put in last night.
I've took the eggs the first day. Yesterday, there were no eggs. Of course, she is sitting in the most popular nest so that might be why the others aren't laying. Do I keep her in the pen all the time, night and day?
I've had a hen go broody, any advice/ideas on how to break her? I've gone from getting 12 to 15 eggs a day from my girls, to 6. I've been trying ice packs under her but I think it's so hot here that she is enjoying it! LOL
