    What's your favorite/friendliest breed

@K0k0shka they will mate with who they want when they want, even if the other party is not interested. Some of the behavior is to assert dominance as the flock leader.

    What's your favorite/friendliest breed

I definitely agree that genetics, breeder, what the birds are being bred for is also a big factor and sample size. For example I've only had two Wyandottes , so my sample size is small. Both birds were super flighty. Probably not an accurate assessment of the breed. Most of the hatchery birds...

    What's your favorite/friendliest breed

Hands down of my hens, Bielefelders are the friendliest breed , but in general all of my "heavy breeds" are friendly. My # 2 would be my RIR (Cackle Exhibition). My #3 would be Orpingtons. My colored egg layers are nervous / flighty (CCL , Opal Legbar , Olive egger) My roosters are very...

My experience with bielefelders so far

I've had my Bielefelders for 5 years now. I bought mine from a private breeder. This is my experience. They are very calm birds. I have not had any issues with either my girls or boy. Most of the time you can just walk up to them and pick them up. I haven't experienced any more or less...

The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

Thank you Embarrassingly I can’t tell the RIR eggs from the BA. I have 4 RIR and 2 BA and a couple others that share two nest boxes. The egg color and shape are very similar. Hopefully I will see some differences in the chicks when they hatch.

The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

Thank you So he is Isabel something 😂. He is definitely different than my CCO rooster in barring and build. I say Crele because his parents were supposed to be Crele. My RIR are very very dark I was hoping to identify the mothers at hatch. I also have him over Australops , which should be all...

The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

Isabel Cuckoo Orp rooster to RIR hen. Will the chicks be black with leakage or will the be red? Thank you in advance. I try to use the calculator but I’m not sure exactly what Isabel is Lav partridge? Lav is diluted black , so is the color actually black diluted ?

Any Tips to starting chicks outdoors?

@RainyDayChickens make sure your brooder is snake proof. Obviously if it's cold (below 60) you don't have to worry but on warm days they can be a concern for chicks sub four weeks old.

Can anyone recommend the best chicken to raise?

I live in central Georgia. I really like our Bielefelders. They are large and calm. I have not experienced any issues with the heat. I think fresh cold water helps and an area that they can get out of the sun. I would also look at Heritage RIR. I have some of Cackle's Exhibition RIR and I am...

BYC Debate Thread- What's The Friendliest Chicken Breed?

In my experience is Bielefelders are by far the friendliest with Orps being number two. My RIR are Heritage RIR , not production , they are also very friendly. I have not had large amounts of any breeds so my experience is based off of 8 or less birds of each breeds. The breeds purchased from...

Trying to decide which breed or breeds?

@GrumpyRoo you might want to check out North Star Poultry. They have several different sex linked varieties that offer different feather patterns with friendly personalities (advertised). They look to have Wyandottes as part of the mix but non the less they look very interesting. I have no...

Trying to decide which breed or breeds?

I might would narrow it down to your likes and dislikes: comb , skin color (legs) , egg color , feather patterns or colors , bird size , feather type (soft / hard) , availability , clean or feathered feet, where you plan to buy from, and average egg production. I think free ranging might help...
