I've bought from tractor supply and from other feed stores without issue, but perhaps I'm lucky. For layers, I'd go rir, production red, or Leghorn. They all have been heat tolerant, in my experience.
I had a similar experience. I called yesterday, worried about the shipment of my chicks. Only after contacting them did I get an email confirming shipment and a tracking number. On the bright side... All of the chicks I ordered came alive and in one day. 14 St. Run Delawares, 2 buff orp pullets...
Lots of good farm land down there. What didn't you like about your Delawares? Were they from a hatchery and if so which one? I've been ordering from ideal when I can't get something local.
