How many roosters are too many?

Thanks for the advice. Right now I have 4 roos and 12 hens. I do want happy chickens. I will start by letting 2 roos go. :he

How many roosters are too many?

Great advice! My original Ameraucana is already being "over-attentive" with one of my hens. She's looking really sad. His last two favorites perished this year without any signs of sickness except for the lack of feathers from being "loved". Now he only has 3 ladies left from original batch. He...

How many roosters are too many?

It's hard to tell which to keep. I have an Easter Egger rooster that is getting quite big and is starting to "dance" with the hens. I have another new Ameraucana rooster and he seems like he is a late bloomer (born same time as EE). My original Ameraucana rooster is a stud, so definitely want to...

How many roosters are too many?

Long story short...I learned how to incubate eggs and now I have too many roosters (I think). I have a 1.5-year-old Ameraucana rooster who is amazing. He is the boss of 3 adult hens. I recently bought 4 hens and hatched 8 chicks. Out of the 8 chicks, I KNOW at least 3 are roosters. Everyone...

How to decide which roosters to cull/rehome?

Oh dear. I have a very similar situation. Good luck! The good news I have a friend who just learned how to butcher chickens; bad news...I'm a sap and can't hand over my roos. I make the rookie move and named them already. Ahhhh!!

    Huge temperature spike!?

Good luck! I just bought this bator because the last one was defective. I think it was because I kept it in my classroom and the room temperature fluctuated a lot. Lesson learned. At least we got 4 to hatch!

    Huge temperature spike!?

I am incubating chicks in my classroom and have been monitoring closely. I have 2 additional temperature gauges and hygrometers in bator. 4 of the 7 chicks hatched 1.5 days early. The other 3 chicks have showed no action since the last by 24 hours. I candled them and there is no movement...

Comment by 'chickyrookie' in article 'How To Incubate & Hatch Chicken Eggs - Just 21 Days From Egg To Chicken!'

Did you calibrate your hygrometer? I had the same problem, then bought a good quality hygrometer, calibrated it, and realized that I was drowning my eggs in humidity. What incubator are you using?

    Incubator Question

I don't think it matters what plug to take out, but I think it recommended to take out the one by the thermometer controls and leave the other one in until day 18. My first incubator was a 9300, so it's a little different I realized. I found a Youtube video on yours here: Maybe you've seen it...

    Incubator Question

Yes! Good idea, but I'd get another one just in case. Also, calibrate it. The humidity looks a bit high. Did you fill ALL the water channels?

    Incubator Question

Speaking from some recent trials and tribulations with this incubator! Here's what I learned from my first 2 batches of incubating eggs this year with this model: 1. Temperature and humidity are SUPER important. You will need to calibrate your thermometers and hygrometers. Definitely use more...

    Trouble walking?

Update #2: Woke up this morning to find my chick walking around just fine and cleaning itself. I thank everyone for their advice and links to sources. I have learned so much through this process. (I feel somewhat of a mini-expert amongst my chicken friends). I think what saved his life was...

    Trouble walking?

Update: I gave the little guy/gal some vitamin water with electrolytes and put a shelving liner for better traction and its doing so much better. Still wobbly on its feet with the "drunken sailor" walk, but its able to stand upright and walk around. I hope he doesn't relapse when we go to bed at...

    Trouble walking?

My 1 day old Ameraucana chick is having trouble standing on legs. He had quite a traumatic experience hatching out of egg (shrink wrapped) and I had to assist. Once out, he looked like he was doing fine walking, eating, and drinking.' This morning I woke up to find him struggling to walk or...

    Chick can't walk

Day old chick who could walk yesterday, can not walk this morning. Is trying so hard, but can't get off its butt. Had a bit of trauma getting out of shell yesterday, but was doing just fine when I went to bed. Now it just squirms on its behind and moves its legs like crazy, but can't get erect...

    Help! Bubbles from egg?

She's out and absorbed the rest of the yolk. I can home from work and she escaped from cup in bator. She is still weak and trying to move around but is VERY clumsy. Has a hard time keeping head up, but is trying to be active. I hope nothing is wrong with neck.

    Help! Bubbles from egg?

Yes. I'm reading it. It has been helpful. The little guy couldn't hatch because the membrane dried to his eye and upper body. He was literally stuck. I'm glad I assisted, but there's still gooeyness around bottom of shell and don't want to rush the absorbtion, but need to head to work in a bit...
