    Boy/Girls? Mixed breed - 9 weeks

1&2 is same bird, different lighting and I had guessed pullet the way it acts. I thought the other dark bird was a boy just the way it struts around and sort of takes command of the other 3. The two white/browns I was not sure on at all. I'm still learning all this as it's only been a year...

    Boy/Girls? Mixed breed - 9 weeks

Hello all. We have 2 each of some mixed breeds we got from a friend who is trying her hand at breeding and hatching chicks. The two darker birds are supposed to end up being Olive Eggers and the two brown/whites are just a mix she wasnt 100% sure on. They are around 9-10 weeks now and we...

Do EE's egg color change after they mature a bit?

Nope, mine are all the same. We have some light colored with white speckles, a little pinkish, blue and green now. Nice to have a variety! With it being winter we only get one EE egg every few days though which is a huge bummer. We have to actually go buy eggs a few times since winter set in.

Chickens still flying the run after clipping one wing

So I have 2 EE's and one we are not sure what she is that like to fly over our 50" tall fence. We have a pretty large run but with all the rain in SC we have a big mud pit and I think they may be escaping for drier pastures! Anyplace they escape is not good with our dogs and neighbor dog as...

Eggs outside in cold = refrigerated?

First year with chickens. I have about 4-6 eggs per day from our small flock of 9 hens. Temps are getting cooler rapidly so wanted to ask before winter hits. Eggs that are outside for a few hours in the cold - does that mean they are considered to be refrigerated? I thought I read that once...

Do EE's egg color change after they mature a bit?

Bought 6 EE's from local farm supply store since kids really wanted some different colored eggs vs. brown. They are 7 months old now and two started laying. First one is laying brown eggs :( Knew it was possible but still a giant bummer. Second just starting laying two days ago and laid...

Can you prevent hens going Broody in first place?

First year chicken owner. I had a Cochin go broody on me about a month ago now I think. She has only been laying a couple months. Took a few days to break her but she broke, seems happy as can be and after 2 weeks started laying again. OK, Cochins can go broody a lot, I did not know that...

Do coops need to be fully enclosed and dark?

I have a mix of birds. Two Cochins, a Wyandotte, Jersey Giant, Austrolorp, a group of Easter Eggers and a mystery bird we are not sure what she is but she lays eggs daily! My Cochins are so fluffy they look like they would be warm on Everest. The others - not sure how they handle cold.

Do coops need to be fully enclosed and dark?

I had thought about just adding on an extra tarp in the winter to cover a little more of the top and/or the sides to keep more wind out. What I didnt know is if I needed to actually wall off part of the coop to make it dark and fully enclosed. Two of my roost bars are actually out in the open...

Do coops need to be fully enclosed and dark?

I thought I read below a certain temp (40-45*?) that all their energy goes into staying warm and no longer producing eggs. If you can keep them warmer than those temps they lay, if not, no eggs!

Do coops need to be fully enclosed and dark?

New owner - 11 birds. One of the #1 things I kept reading about when looking at buying or building a coop was ventilation. I was even going to convert part of our shed into a coop and was told I needed way more ventilation. Problem I had (still have) is if I see all these "Commercially sold"...

My hen wont leave her outside nest all of a sudden

Well I broke my broody bird! She has not been acting up for a couple days now. I just had to keep blocking off where she wanted to nest and pick her up and move her to a new spot or by the other birds. She made a new nest near where her old one was and was laying there so blocked that and...

My hen wont leave her outside nest all of a sudden

She is still a work in progress. I blocked her old nest so she made a new one right next to it. She is still laying eggs daily but doesnt want to move from her nest. The other birds look at her like she is nuts! I have been picking her up and putting her by treats I set out like watermelon...

My hen wont leave her outside nest all of a sudden

OK, she is broody... She growled - a lot at me. She tried biting me (never even came close before) She did fluff herself up! Especially her tail, she fanned it out. When I did finally move her, she did melt flat! She looked weird and still would not move. (I thought she was injured!) She did...

My hen wont leave her outside nest all of a sudden

I thought new birds dont go broody... She was our first layer and just started maybe 3-ish weeks ago or so. If she is, she stops laying - right? She laid today. I go and get the egg right after she lays it. If she keeps it up I'll need to read how to "break" it I guess.

My hen wont leave her outside nest all of a sudden

No eggs in nest, I checked. She lays one a day in that nest and then walks off and does her thing for the day.

How to get hen to use nesting box

Their run is sort of free ranging. It is very large but enclosed on all sides with wire fence and the whole top is covered in hawk netting. Its probably close to 80' x 50'. Also includes a garden they love to forage around in. One nest is actually in the garden! I have two birds laying in...

My hen wont leave her outside nest all of a sudden

New to chickens. Have 3 that are laying finally! Yay! Everything has been going really well until tonight. She is a small Cochin and was the first one to lay. She made an outside nest in the shade of our shed and she lays there every day. She just lays a small egg, gets up and is off with...

How to get hen to use nesting box

I still cant get my 3 to lay in their boxes. They all made nests outdoors and only lay in those nests! It is every day. I know exactly where to go get them but they refuse to use their boxes. I tried golf balls and real eggs. Doesnt matter, they totally ignore them. Ideas? These are all...

My last shot at this - pretty much sure by now!

Hey all, I wanted to update everyone that chimed in. The Black Jersey is a girl! She is laying eggs. We now have 3 laying eggs - The Jersey, our other Cochin and one other we are not sure what the breed is honestly... We get 3 a day from those girls. Still have two roosters in the flock -...
