    Egg laying issue

Thanks, all. I'm thinking it may be age related, and now with six new hatchlings all grown up and in the flock, I think stressed from overcrowding is adding to it. I gotta get rid of 3 of the new guys (all roosters).

    Egg laying issue

Howdy, folks! Posting this to see if anyone has had a similar situation. Got a girl about 4 years old and she's started to slow down - expected. However, the eggs she now lays quite often are broken in the nest. A few times, the egg is intact, but with a semi-cracked dimple in one side. The...

Got a girl not being herself

Just to let you all know, we had to say bye to the girl. Took her into a poultry vet and it didn't take long for him to diagnose her with a tumor - that was the hard round object I could feel thru the vent walls. He said that at around 2-3 years of age (she was 3) is when chickens can develop...

Got a girl not being herself

Hi, folks, thanks for the replies. I managed to catch her - wasn't very hard and not much struggle - she may be a little thin. Attached are pics of her vent - it kinda looked OK, close inspection didn't show any critters - probing in the vent was somewhat difficult. I couldn't get my finger...

Got a girl not being herself

Howdy, all. I got one that hasn't been herself for a few weeks now. I've noticed her comb seems to have shrunk and lost it's color, and she doesn't hold her tail feathers up like the others. She's not been keeping tight in the flock, but seems to slowly follow and not all that sociable...

    Hens would rather roost outside

Howdy, All! Our hens are doing something I'm not sure if I should be concerned about or not. As you can see in the photo, the coop is on the right & the run is fenced with hardware cloth and a door that closes at night. They've started roosting in the run at night on the bars in the run...

    Persistent Broody Hen

Thanks for the advice - that's what I'm leaning towards - she's just been a constant PITA. I know as far as "breaking" her, she's been the most difficult. The others have been fairly easy. -J

    Persistent Broody Hen

Thx, I kinda wondered about that - it's on the timer now and will be on sun-up>sun-down. -J

    Persistent Broody Hen

Sure! And that's the "perp" in there now! Large dog cage, suspended about 4 foot off the floor in the extended run - lots of air flowing under her. Even read about putting a fan blowing up on her undersides - didn't work for me. -J

    Persistent Broody Hen

No curtains, but it is somewhat dark, which I understood that is kinda what's needed. I do have a light in there, but it's not on - maybe I should have it on through the day? -J

    Persistent Broody Hen

Howdy, all! I am almost ready to send this hen to the stew pot! However I feel the need to ask for any advice before I do that. She has already gone broody on me 3 times this year - 2 yr old Speckled Sussix. I have read about everything I could find regarding how to prevent broodiness, break...
