What were your worst mistakes when you first started?

Getting chickens before the coop was built. Spent every spare minute for 6 weeks in the cold and rainy Pacific NW winter building a coop. And then after a few months wished it were bigger so spent another month in the hot blazing sun doubling the size. :barnie

    Why break broody hen?

Thanks. If I’ve researched correctly, I can raise the crate off of the ground. The bottom of the crate has large spaces between the wire. Should I put hardware cloth on top of it? And she stays in 24/7 for a few days?

    Why break broody hen?

I’ve been removing her from the nesting box, but she goes back after eating and drinking. I also didn’t know they stayed in the nesting box at night. I figured they were programmed to roost. She has become disruptive to the flock, so tomorrow she will put in the dog crate. I’m not so worried...

    Why break broody hen?

@Ridgerunner Thanks for your response. I didn’t realize they stopped laying while broody. Guess it’s time to break her so she can earn her keep.

    Why break broody hen?

I have a 6 month old Speckled Sussex that’s gone broody. She took to the nesting box yesterday and hisses when I push her out. I have no roosters and she isn’t sitting on any eggs. I’ve researched on here about breaking her broodiness, but I don’t understand why one cares. What am I missing?

    Re-homing sucks!

I posted on here when it happened the first time and it was suggested I get others like her or re-home her. I’m really happy with the size of my flock and am not ready for more just yet. I know it’s for the best, but it’s still sad. Who knew one could get so attached to chickens.

    Re-homing sucks!

I am giving my feather footed pullet away today. I’ve tried to work with the constant feather pulling and pecking from the rest of the flock, but realize it isn’t fair to her. Weekly foot soaks, cleaning and camouflaging is no longer working. I found a home with a small flock of 3 that are a...

    First egg......or so I thought.

Great idea, that’s what I’ll do. Thanks for the tip.

    First egg......or so I thought.

It’s compressed straw that they can scratch and it loosens up. I’m guessing a bag of straw is cheaper. That’s why I haven’t bought them.

    First egg......or so I thought.

You can buy them on Amazon. I have no idea if they are any good. I just had to crawl under my coop for another egg.

    First egg......or so I thought.

I have ceramic eggs in there. But I’m definitely going to change the bedding since they keep kicking it out anyways. I thought about maybe nesting pads??

    First egg......or so I thought.

I can’t free range since we have hawks that nest on our property. So I won’t have to look too far to find their hiding places.

At least I know to look beyond the nesting box. Lol!

    First egg......or so I thought.

I am using the same pine bedding as I use in the coop itself. I’m thinking I should change it to something different.

    First egg......or so I thought.

I opened up the nesting boxes and there it was...my first egg. After taking pictures and being so excited, I went in the run to visit the girls. When I knelt down to “talk” to them, imagine my surprise when there were 5 eggs sitting in their dust bath. Ugh! Since the dust bath was under to...

If you had it to do over again, what would you change about your coop/run?

I would have listened to everyone that said to make sure you have your coop ready BEFORE you get your chicks. I got 8 in February with no coop. We spent 6+ weeks in the cold winter rain building one. It turned out really nice, but a month later I felt it was too small although it adhered to...

    My sincerest apologies!

OMG! The same thing happened to me. I bought 5 chicks and thought they were so cute, I went back and got 3 more. Unlike you, I didn’t have a coop yet. My husband and I spent 6 weeks in the cold and windy rain building the coop to get them out of the garage. Now two months later and I started...

    Chicken has bloody feet.

I think you may be right. I noticed that she was pecking at her feet yesterday and the fact that it is both feet, it’s hard to believe she could injure them both. I did go out and buy the items that others suggested and she is much better. I have to admit that when I got her, I hadn’t done any...

    Chicken has bloody feet.

Thank you. It’s encouraging to know that it may just be normal chicken behavior. My chickens are definitely beloved pets. Like all chicken “moms”, I have grown very attached and my granddaughter is in love with them too. I checked on her again when I closed them in for the night and the bleeding...
