    Ear/Sinus Infection?

I did not. My wife and kids probably wouldn't have been keen to assist with that and it was getting dark. I asked my wife if she would care if I did it on the kitchen table, but she said no. :D

    Ear/Sinus Infection?

Nothing obvious upon cutting her open. One of her ears deep inside had a very hard deposit completely filling the canal. I was able to crush it, but it had almost a leathery quality. She had no meat on her bones in spite of eating quite a lot of food since Thanksgiving. Breast was starting...

    Ear/Sinus Infection?

Yes, was disappointed to see that. I'd read lots of other stuff on their site a couple of weeks ago, but must have missed that little tidbit. It's understandable, I suppose. But it does kind of stink. You're correct that she is probably more uncomfortable than I realize. They are awfully...

    Egg turning while incubating.

I've always turned them twice per day and unless 90%+ hatch rate isn't very good (admittedly smallish sample sizes... but probably close to 100 or more chicks over the years). This year, for example, set 18 eggs, 17 chicks just hatched the last couple of days, one quit after a couple of days...

    Ear/Sinus Infection?

Well... I just looked and the university diagnostic lab here only accepts specimens from licensed vets. So, I guess I cannot get her tested. That's lousy...

    Ear/Sinus Infection?

I think I've decided to cull her on Monday so that I can ship her to the state lab more easily. I almost did it last night, but decided to wait so that I can have her analyzed. Unless something drastic changes, I'll wait as she does not seem to be suffering... but it's so far to tell. I...

    First goose egg!

Our oldest daughter found it. She's the most involved/engaged with the chickens and geese, so it was really cool that she found it... and she was VERY excited. I told her I was really happy she found it because she'll probably remember it for the rest of her life and that makes me happy...

At what age would 25 CC become noticeable?

Not much in my experience. Go on YouTube and find a video of 8 week old CC and take a listen. Privacy fence will help if they can't see, they're less likely to know. I can't imagine ratting out a neighbor, personally. But everyone is different... and we also don't have neighbors anymore. :D...

    First goose egg!

It's been unseasonably warm here in Iowa. We have two geese and one gander and he's been mating both of the girls fairly frequently, so I figured eggs would soon follow. I didn't expect them so early, figured they'd be into March at least. But one of them dropped their first egg yesterday.

deer feeder for chickens...hoping to cut waste and rats...

You could get a shallow, rubber type dish under it that would catch most of the food and keep them from eating it off the ground.

At what age would 25 CC become noticeable?

In my experience raising up to about 35 CC at a time in a 6x10 tractor. They never got loud, they basically are making weeks old chicken sounds, they just are the size of a year old chicken. They are always poop machines, however. If you rotate them daily, the grass shouldn't die at your...

    Chicken in the road

That's a very well feathered out Cornish cross. Mine never looked that good. @Carolminifarm does the stray spend most of the day laying down? Does it gobble up food like it hasn't eaten in a week?

    Ear/Sinus Infection?

There is, unfortunately still "cheese" in her ears. But she doesn't have basically any of the caking she was having before (that was leaking out each night/day and leaving crust over her ears. There might still be a little, but it's like 5% of what it was, if that. I am really at a loss with...

    Chicken walking in water

You did what I would do in your situation. There are also those pine betting pellets that absorb a lot of water that might be an option. But the hay should work fine. I wouldn't lock them inside just because there's a bit of water there. Over the years I've moved to runs that are covered...

    Ear/Sinus Infection?

An update... I skipped ointments for half a day and she woke up with eyes crusted completely shut. So I kept up with the ointments and started putting a little peroxide in her ears twice a day. And finally I think it started making a difference. I skipped everything tonight as she was...

Getting more chickens, should I mix my flock?

Keeping two separate flocks year-round is a royal pain. Particularly in the winter. You'll need them separate at least for a bit while the young ones grow, but I would plan on integrating them. I'm a big proponent of getting your chickens out and a about if you can. Have you thought about...

    Just how noisy are geese?

We have plenty of coyotes, bobcats, weasels, hawks, bald eagles, owls and foxes as well. We live on 30 acres with a few ponds and a pretty big creek running through it. I was VERY concerned that we'd have constant issues with predators... but *knock on wood* not a single lose to predators yet...

    🐝💗Our Backyard Beekeeping Journey!💗🐝

Yes, orientation flights. Been keeping bees 12 or 13 years. I like a nice small entrance like that, easy to defend. If it's been cold and they haven't flown for awhile, they'll need to orient. And if it's sunny and mid-50s they're probably zipping out for more than just a quick poop.

    Just how noisy are geese?

I'll preface this by saying that I don't have much experience with geese (just short of a year), but I actually like a big white bird mixed in with my chickens. I raised the geese with chicks, and they will come defend a chicken if I pick one up or otherwise upset a hen or rooster. Anyway, I...

    Ear/Sinus Infection?

Forgot to mention the ear canker. Sorry for that, yes, I actually read that article when originally looking into what might be wrong with her. I wish it were easier to see down into her ears. I'm starting to think that I should be doing peroxide on her ears daily. Or maybe the ointment I'm...
