Showing Chickens at the Orange County CA Fair

The fair does not require you to auction off your animals. I showed there for many years, and on occasion, we would make other arrangements. But what are you going to do with your chicken after the fair? If it's a meat breed, it's probably going to die a more horrible death than if you just...

    dogs and chickies?

My lab does a little of both. He will stare into the brooder forever. He can also be tempted to try to "catch" a chick if it moves too quickly. I little iron fist covered by a velvet glove cured him of that. He still likes to watch them though. He basically ignores the adult chickens, but I...

    oops

Quote: I guess I didn't clarify, those chicks were being raised communally by two broody hens. Had 14 chicks hatch within two days of each other, but am down was down to just 5 after a few days.

    oops

So, we were having a hard time keeping the little hatchlings alive. Not sure if it was a cat or dog killing them, probably one of the horse boarder's dogs when she wasn't looking, as we'd just find little carcasses around the yard. I didn't want to lose the whole clutch, so I had my girlfriend...

Broody stopped sitting 2 days early. Can I salvage?

My broody hen just gave up tonight, those eggs were due to hatch in two days. Is there anything I can do? I do not know anyone with an incubator and don't have any other broody hens right now.

    MMs free rare exotic chick!

Just wanted to address the chick survival issues too. I ordered 42 chicks of various large breeds, ended up with 45 including the spare "exotic" chick. Unfortunately, I never received the email saying they were shipped. I checked my order status yesterday, and sure enough, they were already...

    Chickens and turkeys?

"they" say you're not supposed to do that because of blackhead disease. But, I've known many people to raise chickens and turkeys together and have had no problems.

    Brahma Roos, Quiet?

To add to that, my Brahma hens seem to have lower, coarser, quieter voices than the rest of the hens. More like a duck than a chicken. If it held true with roosters, I can't imagine them making really good full on crow.

How long to chickens live naturally?

my dog killed my girlfriend's step mother's pet 12 year old Barred Rock. Got to assume she would have lived longer if he hadn't "retrieved" her for daddy.

    Free range: what's your definition?

Just another definition for folks... "cage free" in the chicken business basically means 10,000 chickens on the ground, running around in their own filth in one huge cage the size of a barn. It doesn't mean they ever even see daylight. But personally, I do not consider chickens in a run area...

    OSB vs. PLYWOOD

We've got T111 on the outside walls, insulation, then 1/2" plywood on the inside coming. Right now it's just the T111 outside, we're working on the interior. But if you don't mind spending the extra money, consider Advantech floors. It's spendy, but basically waterproof and has a 50 year...

    Why do people dislike leghorns?

Pretty much all of my "neighbors" on our stretch of county road raise chickens. Everyone has differing opinions. One neighbor raises Red Stars because they can't stand Leghorns but want lots of eggs. Another neighbor keeps about 50 layers and always tries to have at least a dozen leghorns in...

    Growth rates

Anybody have a chart anywhere showing standard heavy breed chicken growth rates? It's been a while since I last had chickens, and I was just curious how much larger my chicks are going to get. They're 8-9 week old Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Jersey Giants, and Brahmas.

feed you can give chickens to make them fertile

I'll be danged, had no idea that could be done in birds. Still not really a viable option for anything but an intense scientific breeder, as after years of research they managed just 8% hatch rate from those genetic strains. And they were all males, because you apparently can't get females by...

feed you can give chickens to make them fertile

Without getting a little R-rated, the concept sounds like the equivalent of telling a woman she can get pregnant by... um well you know

feed you can give chickens to make them fertile

Yes there is. It's called sperm, you get that from roosters. IF you wanna get cute, the rooster doesn't have to be in the presence of the hen to inseminate her, but there dang sure ain't anything you can feed them to make fertile eggs.
