Best chicken breed for tick control?

Hi all, I live in southern Ontario, and this year is looking to be BAD for ticks and biting insects. I'm wondering about chickens for insect control (so, good foragers, I guess?). As well, they would need to be cold- reasonably heat-tolerant. Thanks in advance!

Gander with frostbite! Suggestions for treatment

Poor Leonard. I feel so sad and disappointed that someone let him get to that point I haven’t been able to locate a vet since getting my ducks a while back, but I will give it another go. Thanks so much for the advice—-I was having a hard time finding any information online

    Post Your Favorite Duck Breed!

Appleyards are my personal favourites. Big and beautiful. They have calm personalities, forage really well, and are very decent layers. The perfect duck! Pic: my handsome boy, Alice on the left (yes, his name is Alice. We were told he was female when we got him, but by the time we learned...

Gander with frostbite! Suggestions for treatment

Hello all! I rescued a gander a couple of days ago (I think he’s a Chinese x Embden) who seems not to be in the best shape. He’s terribly thin (you can feel his breast bone very easily), and his feathers are in rough shape. Most concerning are his feet: he has small patches of frostbite...

Sad and lonely goose... Advice please!

I let them all free range together, and you're right: they get along (mostly) very well. I think I will be adding another goose/gander soon, for the goose's sake. Because I originally acquired her for the purpose of "guarding" the ducks from hawks, I hope that the geese won't completely abandon...

Sad and lonely goose... Advice please!

I tried that recently, actually, and it worked! The drake no longer attacks her, and she has re-established herself in the flock. I think I'm still going to get another goose/gander, however. She spends a lot of time gazing into mirrored surfaces, and I just think she'll be happier with another...

Sad and lonely goose... Advice please!

I'm definitely concerned about that. My Appleyard drake is quite pugnacious. I know he'd definitely try to start something (something that he'd lose, most likely, if he tried to pick on a gander).

Sad and lonely goose... Advice please!

Thanks for all the replies! I'm definitely having a bit of trouble locating a single goose for sale here in S.Ontario. I know of someone who is willing to part with a single year-old Embden gander. I have some reservations, but am considering it at the moment.

Hey Isaac, sorry just checked in today. I live in S. Ontario (near Guelph). You?

Help please, Which geese do I get!

I guess it depends on the predator. I added an Embden goose to my flock of ducks, and her mere presence does seem to effectively deter the local Red-tailed and Cooper's hawks. They fly overhead, but haven't had a go since I added her. I find that she is much more alert than the ducks, scanning...

Sad and lonely goose... Advice please!

Hi all, I have a year old female (at least, that was what i was told when I got her) Embden goose that I've had for a couple of months now. I purchased her to act as a "guardian" for my small flock of 5 ducks (4 hens and a drake--I didn't expect her to be able to do much, but I was hoping her...

    Guard goose/geese for pet ducks?

Hi everyone, thanks for your thoughts! I guess that sounding an alarm would suffice, although I suppose I was hoping that the larger size the goose relative to the ducks would help to dissuade daytime predators like the raptors (I've really only had this one incident with the hawk...other than...

    Guard goose/geese for pet ducks?

Oh and also, male(s) or female(s)? Which are a better option?

    Guard goose/geese for pet ducks?

Hi all! After nearly losing one of my pet ducks to a hawk the other day, I am strongly considering getting a goose to help ward off predators/raise the alarm (my Appleyard drake is clearly not intimidating enough). They free range during the day and I work from home, so I'd like something that...
