Hi all,
I live in southern Ontario, and this year is looking to be BAD for ticks and biting insects. I'm wondering about chickens for insect control (so, good foragers, I guess?). As well, they would need to be cold- reasonably heat-tolerant.
Thanks in advance!
Poor Leonard. I feel so sad and disappointed that someone let him get to that point I haven’t been able to locate a vet since getting my ducks a while back, but I will give it another go. Thanks so
much for the advice—-I was having a hard time finding any information online
Appleyards are my personal favourites. Big and beautiful. They have calm personalities, forage really well, and are very decent layers. The perfect duck!

Hello all! I rescued a gander a couple of days ago (I think he’s a Chinese x Embden) who seems not to be in the best shape. He’s terribly thin (you can feel his breast bone very easily), and his feathers are in rough shape. Most concerning are his feet: he has small patches of frostbite...
I let them all free range together, and you're right: they get along (mostly) very well. I think I will be adding another goose/gander soon, for the goose's sake. Because I originally acquired her for the purpose of "guarding" the ducks from hawks, I hope that the geese won't completely abandon...
I tried that recently, actually, and it worked! The drake no longer attacks her, and she has re-established herself in the flock. I think I'm still going to get another goose/gander, however. She spends a lot of time gazing into mirrored surfaces, and I just think she'll be happier with another...
I'm definitely concerned about that. My Appleyard drake is quite pugnacious. I know he'd definitely try to start something (something that he'd lose, most likely, if he tried to pick on a gander).
Thanks for all the replies! I'm definitely having a bit of trouble locating a single goose for sale here in S.Ontario. I know of someone who is willing to part with a single year-old Embden gander. I have some reservations, but am considering it at the moment.
I guess it depends on the predator. I added an Embden goose to my flock of ducks, and her mere presence does seem to effectively deter the local Red-tailed and Cooper's hawks. They fly overhead, but haven't had a go since I added her. I find that she is much more alert than the ducks, scanning...
Hi all,
I have a year old female (at least, that was what i was told when I got her) Embden goose that I've had for a couple of months now. I purchased her to act as a "guardian" for my small flock of 5 ducks (4 hens and a drake--I didn't expect her to be able to do much, but I was hoping her...
Hi everyone, thanks for your thoughts! I guess that sounding an alarm would suffice, although I suppose I was hoping that the larger size the goose relative to the ducks would help to dissuade daytime predators like the raptors (I've really only had this one incident with the hawk...other than...
Hi all!
After nearly losing one of my pet ducks to a hawk the other day, I am strongly considering getting a goose to help ward off predators/raise the alarm (my Appleyard drake is clearly not intimidating enough). They free range during the day and I work from home, so I'd like something that...
