Colorado - 6 Older Hens Need Re-Homing, Please Ask Around - Mareks Resistant Birds

An update on the girls: We are down to three still in need of a retirement home. We lost the silver laced polish and the Welsummer this spring, most likely due to age as both deaths were quite sudden and they each seemed fine the day before. The vet performed an autopsy on the polish and did not...

Colorado: Looking for older companion or rehoming opportunity for single chicken

Hi! I live in Golden and work with a small aging flock that was also exposed to Mareks. I posted this thread last year, but there are still three birds remaining from the group...

Colorado - 6 Older Hens Need Re-Homing, Please Ask Around - Mareks Resistant Birds

Thank you! I will check it out. Yes, I am aware it is a shot in the dark. But I also know some people do keep Mareks resistant flocks and these ladies all fit that category. I figure if anyone like that is around on the forums and wants to help out, it's better to put it out there than to not.

Colorado - 6 Older Hens Need Re-Homing, Please Ask Around - Mareks Resistant Birds

New Year's Eve bump! Still on the hunt for a home for these ladies. Down to 5 birds, Big Mama is up in chicken heaven now. <3 Hopefully it'll be easier to find a home for 5.

Colorado - 6 Older Hens Need Re-Homing, Please Ask Around - Mareks Resistant Birds

Just boosting this again to put it out there that we are still looking for a home for these girls. We aren't sure if Big Mama is going to make it through this winter, she's been very lethargic lately and I think she may be close to end of life, sadly. Vet is coming to look at her next...

Colorado - 6 Older Hens Need Re-Homing, Please Ask Around - Mareks Resistant Birds

I have, a long time ago. I've thought about doing a thread about the coop and the girls, but I dunno if I can/should since they are kinda public access chickens, haha. They are still looking for a home, fyi, to anyone stumbling across this thread! I promise I will update the thread if that changes.

    Colorado

Need some help from my local Coloradans! I've got 6 older hens in need of rehoming, downside is that we have had past members of this flock test positive for Mareks. None of the girls are sick or showing signs of stress, the Mareks postitive test was years ago, so they are all considered Mareks...

Comment by 'KaseySnow' in article 'The Great Big Giant Marek's Disease FAQ'

It is always better to vaccinate chicks for Mareks, but the Mareks vaccine doesn't give your chickens Mareks. If you read the article, it talks about this in the Vaccinations section, first part. "How does the vaccine work" just type that into a search field on the page if you are having trouble...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

I don't blame you--I grew up in the DFW area and traffic was crazy even then--I can't imagine now with all of the population boom there in the last 5 or so years. Especailly Dallas, ugh. I always thought Dallas drivers were the worst. At least on the Ft. Worth side they let you in to merge. If...

Colorado - 6 Older Hens Need Re-Homing, Please Ask Around - Mareks Resistant Birds

Not a bad idea, I will run it by the museum folks since they would need to be the ones to do that. They may be hesitant to advertise that there is Mareks in the area though. Thank you! They really are a fun bunch of ladies, I certainly hope someone is able to take them.

Colorado - 6 Older Hens Need Re-Homing, Please Ask Around - Mareks Resistant Birds

Not yet. I'll definitely post in here if they do find a new home though! We're hoping to find them a new home by this summer, but I am definitely thinking it will take a lot of asking around between now and then to find them a place. So few backyard keepers even know what Mareks is, much less...

Crafting with Egg Shells - Glue?

I did some crushed eggshells on tile and alcohol ink before, they came out pretty fun. You can seal them on with clear medium/mod podge and put felt on the back to make little coasters. Found a similar process here: https://savedbylovecreations.com/2011/08/eggshell-mosaic-dominoe-pendants.html

    Mysterious Dead Chicken 😭

We've had chickens keel over from heart attacks before without having any prior signs of issues. Once one hen frightened herself to death; another had a heart attack brought on by her obsessive overeating and resulting poor health. Sometimes internal things are going on that we can't see or that...

    More dead chickens 🤦🏼‍♀️

So there's a link to a couple of anti-viral solutions in that big Mareks article. If you just scroll down to the Control section (or ctrl+f and search for the word "Control"), you'll find links to the known solutions that have been proven to kill Mareks. Good that you have an animal proof...

    More dead chickens 🤦🏼‍♀️

I was just about to link that Mareks article too. It is an amazing resource, I highly recommend reading it thoroughly. I am battling a similar situation with a flock I work with and it is a very involved process to even attempt to get rid of Mareks, much less keep it out. The virus is known to...

Colorado - 6 Older Hens Need Re-Homing, Please Ask Around - Mareks Resistant Birds

I would soooo appreciate any help finding people in CO (or people willing to make a trip out here) who would be willing to take these gentle old ladies. I am anticipating them being difficult to re-home due to their age and Mareks positive status, so please yes spread the word. 💕 They are...

    Hen attacked!

She is probably not moving much because she is in a lot of pain. You can try crushing up a very small amount of asprin and feeding it to her mixed in with some scrambled eggs, if she'll take it. I am not sure the amount, but I believe I have read on BYC that a baby asprin is an okay dose for a...
