Hi, thanks for this thread about a swollen eyelid. My red star hen has a swollen eyelid, though not a swollen as the birds above in the thread. She cannot open it, I suspect from injury as there are no bubbles, puss, etc. I just noticed it yesterday when I noticed her eye seemed irritated...
I am not an expert by any means, but I suggest finding another milk source for her. Our food coop sells fresh goats milk You can also bet mixed fomula. I can't imagine she would get what she needs from the evaporated milk. I am not an expert by any means! She is super cute. I did have a...
I am not sure how it works in Kentucky, but in Florida if we told them we had wild cats to trap they would loan us a trap to bring back with the suspect I am not sure if they do that here.

Thanks everyone so much for your advice. Well, we had the hen that wouldn't quit. My poor husband. He is this big strong guy, but just hated doing it. I ended up helping. I have to say, if you are using the rake in the ice and snow...make sure that you, the hen, the rake, and your helper do...
Thanks CMV...If you don't go all the way through...then...isn't it a much slower death? I thought you were supposed to just lop that baby off clean and get it over with fast. I think you posted on the "rake method" somewhere. I was considering it, but have never done it myself...and don't...
Hi, so we have to cull a hen today. She is a young Wyandotte, around 7 months I think. Can't get her polapse to stay in, and she just drips constantly. So after a week of working with her in the smelly dark box...it is time. I don't think I can bear to push it back in AGAIN to have her...
It is a blue Foleys Wyandotte. Sometimes bad things happen to good birds I asked my husband not to go out in the ice storm to get prep h last night...it actually turned out to not be too bad here. There is some ice, but not as bad as everyone feared.
I got my latex gloves and coconut oil...
Oh Thank You! I do think it is a prolapse that I didn't see until it got really bad. Wyandottes are sooo feathery and downy back there...like poofy pom poms for the cold weather! We have had some very cold nights here in KY recently. I think what may have actually happened is that she did...
She is trying hard. Wyandottes are so quiet and docile anyway, it is hard to tell if she is mad or anything i was at Tractor Supply and the man there asked if the egg could have frozen to her bottom....horrified as i was, i thought...it does actually look like frostbite on the end of her...
Hi, So the other day I was checking on one of our Wyandotte hens...some of which are just starting to lay and I saw a horrible frozen "but-sicle" from ones back side. ewwww It looked like egg and poop all frozen to her bottom. I also found a broken egg on the ground and a couple in the nest...

Most of mine sleep in a 3-sided building, so I doubt you'd need to insulate. But the water will freeze up, so if you can get a heater go ahead. I just go out once or twice a day and break it up, they're usually pretty good about keeping it loosened up during the day.
Thanks! I might...

Im in NW tennessee and the weather here is crazy. It don't really get very cold till Jan and feb. It starts back to the iffy weather after that. We get ice storms and you will need to put in a heat lamp and I would cover the tractor with a tarp. Thats what we do with our tractor...

I don't hav TV so I didn't hear about it. When you said wildfires I thought you where in California. They seem to always have them. But E Kentucky? Not close enough to me but closer than CA. I do hope all is ok. I would think the smoke would hurt the chickens. Is there some way you...
Hi peeps, This is my first winter in Kentucky from Florida and I am not sure how to approach winter here. I have read volumes of posts, but was hoping to get some local insights. Do I need to heat a water fountain here? I have a simple hanging plastic 2 gallon water dispenser. Will it ice...
Thanks Mrs Turbo for the beautiful Blue Wyandottes! The Red Laced one is definitely at the top of the pecking order . They love their new coop and run. They were taking sand baths today and feeling at home in our yard. They get moved to a new patch of fall grass/weeds each morning. They...
When I was a kid we free ranged...didn't even have nesting boxes...and life was an egg hunt! There was one rule, however....always leave one egg in the next so they know where to come back to lay. It seemed to work for the old timers. The trick is to rotate out the egg so that it doesn't go...
