So I just went out to check on my 3 girls and found my BO laying outside the coop dead. She was torn to shreds! I suspect a raccoon because I saw a footprint but it was mid morning and they usually aren’t out in the daytime. And I can’t believe we didn’t hear anything. I am so upset and at a...
Ok thank you Beth. I am getting a little nervous because we r leaving on Friday for the weekend. If I let her back into the coop she won’t let the other hens lay their eggs.
I also have a broody Buff Orpington. She went broody on Sunday. This is a first for me. I need to break her because I don’t have a rooster and obviously she can’t hatch chicks. I put her in a dog crate yesterday afternoon. She is still sitting in there this morning. How long will it take to...
I am going to buy a couple new hens. I have one already and am wondering how to get the new ones used to the coop so they will return to it at night. I know they need to spend a night or two in it to get used to where their home is. My question is, Can I lock the 3 of them in together or will...
I want to thank everyone for their comments and advise but I’m sorry to say that my sweet Dixie died! I can’t believe how fast it was. Now I have only 1 left and I’m thinking I will try to rehome her. I don’t think I’m a very good chicken mom. And it’s not fair to keep one by itself.
I brought her inside and put her in a crate. Giving her Sav a Chick but she isn’t really drinking it. She is breathing very shallow. I checked her vent and it looks fine. I gave her a bit of scratch but she isn’t eating it. Any other suggestions of what I could feed her or do for her?
I have been giving her crushed egg shells and oyster shells for the past couple of days. I haven’t seen any signs of sneezing or runny nose. She was totally fine yesterday. She is just turned a year old. I feed them layer pellets with occasional scratch and yesterday I fed them a scrambled egg...
Yes I’ll post them. I just checked on her and now she is sitting in the nest, not the one she normally lays eggs in but the one next to it. I hope this means she’s feeling better.
She layed a couple of chalky, rippled looking eggs a couple days ago and I started giving her oyster shell and crushed egg shells, see previous post. The dark liquid is not blood. She just turned a year old. The soft shelled egg seems to be intact but appears to have collapsed.
I just got these pictures and since I was out there about an hour ago there is what looks to be an egg under her. It’s very small like the size of a large grape.
