Broody Hen?

I may have read somewhere else that it can take 3-5 days. Let her out an hour or so before bed time and if she goes back to a nest, back into the crate she goes. If she roosts, then you are good to go.
Ok thank you Beth. I am getting a little nervous because we r leaving on Friday for the weekend. If I let her back into the coop she won’t let the other hens lay their eggs.

She is pretty. My broody hen is an Ameraucana too; she is black. I am glad I saw this picture because I was trying to figure out a way to make her a nesting box. I have a dog crate and that is what I am going to use. It is a great idea.

I just made my girl get off her nest and I noticed mites run across the eggs. How should I address this?
Dust her with permethrin, change out bedding on nest and dust bottom of nest too.
Then replace bedding and dust that too.
Get everything ready first...won't hurt the eggs to be out for a bit.

Probably better check the rest of your birds too, figure out what kind of mites they are.

This should help with that:

Check them over real well for mites and/or lice.

Google images of lice/mites and their eggs before the inspection so you'll know what you're looking for.

Part the feathers right down to the skin around vent, head/neck and under wings.

Best done well after dark with a strong flashlight/headlight, easier to 'catch' bird and also to check for the mites that live in structure and only come out at night to feed off roosting birds.

Wipe a white paper towel along the underside of roost to look for red smears(smashed well fed mites).
