We have seven assorted bread that were named randomly by all of the kiddos. For instance we have Butter who was bright yellow when we bought her but is now snowy white. Speckles who had dark red speckles on her head when we got her.
We do have 6 barred rocks though that we've named after...
We have 7 chicks that are about 5 weeks today. One we are CERTAIN he's a roo. The others we are still waiting. Our roo's tail is stubby, lays flat (horizontally), and has a slight curve down towards his feet. Five of my other chicks tails stand very upright and come together making a vertical...
Well I'm 5 weeks in after purchasing 8 chicks from TSC. 5 were from the pullet bin and 3 from the straight run asst. reds bin. One red passed away. One red looks to be a pullet and all of the rest of the pullets look to be cockerals. figures.
I have 4 others that look just like Poof. But are not nearly as fat and can fly really well. Although some have combs just as large as Poof's. Is that a good indicator of sex?
Ok, we have 7 chicks that are about 4-5 weeks old. They were all the same size at purchase but now I have one that is soo much bigger than the rest. It can't make it up to the roost where all of the other babies hang out during the day. It's very timid about jumping off of my lap when I'm...
The only time Hubs said anything about the electricity was when I walked in the door with the brooder lamp when I bought it from the store. So I have been extremely careful; surviving the day without A/C. Fortunately we are only hitting upper 80's in the afternoon and being extra strict with...
It seems like every time I log on to find out something that may have just occurred to me... someone has just asked the question and it's been answered. You guys are reading my chicken mind!!
Our neighbors across the street have had several dogs since we've lived here (2 years). Each one has been run over by people that drive entirely too fast down our street. The last one my four year-old was at the window and saw it happen. I had to run over and knock on their door again to tell...
We love composting! It's not stinky at all. At one point our bin was so full I found myself tossing items that we would usually compost. It's amazing all the stuff you can put in there. It's been a fabulous task that I would recommend to anyone who's got the space to do it! And it doesn't take...
Well everything is going better than expected. They've been kept together all day and night for the past 2 days. I have a small box turned on it's side in the brooder with them and the little ones have been sleeping inside. I have one chubby older chick who's been snuggling up with them. So...
hmmm I wonder if this is something that the ss only do or other breeds. I have some that I am unsure of breed but I hear one that sings like a pretty song bird in the evening.
yeah, all the black ones are barred rocks.
The other (all lighter) seven were labeled just "pullets" although I am beginning to have my doubts about 1...
Two groups are getting along great! We had an hour of intro time yesterday. Then after all the kiddos went to bed we grouped them back together and they stayed for 2 hours. Today they've all been together since daybreak. So far, great!
Any guesses on the mystery chicks? (Pictured below)...
I see everyone has a post somewhere that says, "We planned on __ but ended up with +__ now" Ours is we planned on 6 but have 13 now. My coop has room for 21. We started with 7 mystery chicks and my husband went to The Feed Pen here in town and came home with 6 Barred Rock pullets . It's...
we used a 2 foot long, 1 inch fence picket screwed to two chunks of 2x4. They love it. I just added a second one tonight because of all the shoving going on.

My DH came home from TSC Wed. last week with 6 chicks (TSC said they were RIR)...some look like the two reddish chicks in the above photo.
Today our animal control officer was here and she said they were Buff Orpingtons but all the photos I find do not look like out...
