Those that got chicks from the "straight run" bin....

Bantams "should" be 50/50 but derned if I didn't get 4 roos out of the 6 White Faced Black Spanish I bought! lol I hope they should be easy to rehome with a pretty picture of them once they're older.

Our first batch of straight run from TSC last year ended up being 6/6 female. We were hoping for 1 roo out of the bunch.

They were Reds and WL

This year's batch of 6 - we got 3 Reds, 2 BR, and 1 SLW.

The guy at TSC last year did a little thing where he held the chick on its back between his thumb and forefinger. If it fought and wiggled it was likely to be a male, if it held still it was more likely to be a female. I thought it was nonsense, but it seems to have worked.
This year no one was around to help with the chicks, so my hubby tried that little trick himself. We didn't know the black ones were barred rocks, nor that you could usually sex them by the spot on their head.

Now that they are feathering out, one of them is lighter than the other, so I'm thinking it may be a roo. The rest..we shall see....

Okay, now I'm confused. I purchased 6 Light Brahmas from my local feed store from a bin that was marked "females." I asked for copy of the hatchery health certificate. Both the "female" and the "straight-run" boxes are checked. So what does that mean? I quizzed the clerk and she assured me these were females. What's up with that?

Well I'm 5 weeks in after purchasing 8 chicks from TSC. 5 were from the pullet bin and 3 from the straight run asst. reds bin. One red passed away. One red looks to be a pullet and all of the rest of the pullets look to be cockerals. figures.
