    Roosters what to do?

Welcome to the coop! Most people here are in agreement that 2 cockerels to only 5 hens is not a healthy balance. The probability of them getting into fights is pretty high because there really isn't enough hens to share. One will take dominance and that's usually not very pretty and could hurt...

    Hello

Howdy, welcome to the coop. Congrats on the farm purchase, gonna be lots of work though. Even a minimally functioning farm is a full-time commitment. Here's a quick summary of how to determine what breed to get: Determine what is your main want from a chicken? Eggs, Meat, companionship etc...

    I'm a new owner of a he.

Hey there, welcome to the coop! Seems possible that your hen may have been either henpecked by the other chickens or attacked by some sort of animal. Giving her a good feed and somewhere safe at night will go a long way towards winning her trust and getting her comfortable. Happy comfortable...

To wash. Or not to wash. That, is the question.

My thoughts exactly! I give eggs away as well and inform them of the pros and cons both ways and let them make the decision. You can certainly wash an egg if you want, but you can't UNWASH them lol. As I said earlier, my contribution to the cleanliness of the coop is how I prevent any disease...

    New to BYC!

Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? No, I have been around chickens my whole life growing up in a farming community of NC, but I didn't get any of my own until Feb of 2018. How many chickens do you have right now? I currently have 4, and may get more later... What...

To wash. Or not to wash. That, is the question.

Very nice video! Although I can see the benefit in doing it that way, the only reason why she's doing the mineral oil is BECAUSE the bloom is washed off. From my understanding (and I COULD be wrong) you will still get 6-9 months of storage time from unwashed eggs as long as the bloom is intact...

Oh! I didn't even realize she was new. Welcome to the coop! lol

To wash. Or not to wash. That, is the question.

Understandable lol. I wash my hands after handling store bought eggs too, so I think if you're gonna wash after handling the eggs even when they ARE washed... What's the point of pre-washing them if it doesn't effect the need to wash lol.

Severely raspy breathing what could be the cause

Wowie, that's going to be a difficult one to address without actually seeing the hen but I can make a list of things I'D check if I were in your situation. But I will preface this by saying if there is a livestock vet in your area and this bird is invaluable to you, I'd visit them ASAP...

    Stopped laying

This may seem somewhat out of place, but check what their coop area is like and check to see if maybe she's laying somewhere else (if she's free range). I know here in NC we've had some pretty severe weather lately, and the stress from that can definitely effect egg production. Also, they lice...

    diatomaceous earth

Pertaining to DE for supplemental benefits, there can not be any because there are no minerals in DE aside from the Silica. The only way one would see a nutritional benefit is if they were already infested with intestinal parasites, and the benefit from the DE would be because you are no longer...
