I am always interested in learning to read the behavior and actions of my chickens...both hens and roosters. This gives great insight to the traits to look for in a well mannered rooster (and hen), especially as we move forward to breeding this upcoming year. Thanks for the great info!
They were vaccinated against Marek's as day old chicks. I only have the original 5 I bought together a year ago. Everyone is being nice to her. Even her BFF is hanging by her side as company. I will try to post a video in a little while. I have a crate to separate her, but it stresses her out to...
My largest Brahma hen (she just turned a year old) is limping. No sign of bumblefoot, no swelling, no wounds. She was fine when I let them out yesterday morning. I went back out to let them out in the yard and noticed her limping. She is eating and drinking fine. She “chickened” around the run...
Update: We finished the 7 days of Miconazole 7. She is doing MUCH better. Way more energy and eating like a champ. Watching her weight and hoping it will start increasing quickly. Her crop is still not entirely empty in the morning (it is harder..about walnut size or smaller). I am really not...
OK massaged crop after first dose of Coconut Oil. It is definitely softer/squishier than first thing this morning. She is eating and drinking great! I checked two of my other hens for comparison, and since it's still rather early their crops are relatively flat...I will check everyone later this...
@azygous I have never given her any kind of oil. Exactly how do I do this without aspirating her?
*Update...she ate it right up! That was easy enough. Will massage in 30 minutes.
Today is day #4 of her treatment. She is doing better (I think). She is eating more...she seems to A LOT more energy. I haven't caught her sleeping like she was. She stayed out with the other girl until right before dark instead of retreating to bed at like 6-6:30. The only thing that concerns...
If you are treating with Corid for Coccidiosis, I believe you do not use medicated feed during the treatment time.
I used 2 tsp for a gallon of water (fresh daily) for 7 days. Then followed with probiotics and vitamins.
You are lacking pollinators...if you want zucchinis you are going to have to pollinate the flowers yourself. Take a small paint brush and move pollen from one plant to another.
She is still with her flock...should she not have access to the crumble? I really haven't seen her eating it to be honest but don't want her eating anything that is counter productive. I will stop the massages.
I have a year old Light Brahma, Benedict who seems to be suffering from sour crop from what I have read on here and other articles online. The whole flock was treated for Coccidiosis back in June. She seemed to be feeling better and eating and drinking well for a bit. Then I noticed she started...
@Soot the silkie how did it go with your hen? I have one now that has the same issue (I believe so anyway). Crop was squishy and large (but still firm if that makes any sense--just not HARD) this morning...might have been that way yesterday as well, but I didn't notice. (Everyone will get daily...
This is a great article that examines the motivations of behavior. I am keeping this for future reference and will be recommending it to other keepers that have roosters.
My pullets began laying at 6 1/2 months. My roosters crowed a bit before that but not supper early. I honestly was wondering if they could crow for a bit...then they wouldn't shut up...LOL. All of your pictures above look like Buff Brahma chicks to me. I had three Buffs, two Darks, and two...
Give it a few more weeks and you will know for sure on all four. They mature slower, so feathers, etc aren't always an accurate way to tell. (coming from someone that had two surprise Brahma roos and one I SWORE was a roo and is definetly a hen)
If I give my pullet Tylan orally, exactly HOW do you administer the dose. Obviously adding it to her water would not be effective. I have heard you have to be careful about aspirating chickens because they not have an epiglottis and can easily swallow liquids down the wrong way.
And...what...
My chicken is doing this same thing. It started Wednesday evening. She has like "spells". She will do it and then be fine for most of the day or hours on end. Eating and drinking fine...poop is fine. I have been treating her with VetRx on her beak, under her chin, and wing..and electrolytes in...
