Hello! My name is Tux. I am 20 weeks old, aren’t I handsome? I am a very docile boy, and not at all aggressive with the ladies. I have recently started practicing my crow, so my mom says I can’t stay. I only crow during the day (so far), none of this early morning before sunrise stuff for me! If...
Here are pics of what we were told of our current hens.
This one was sold by a local farmer as a Golden Comet
This one was sold by the same farmer as a RIR
What do you all think?
So if I’m going to sell this bird, should I just advertise it as a Production Red? I don’t know that it would be considered a red sex link if it turns out to actually be male, as the sex linked reds (from the breed we were told it would be) are supposed to be female and the males are supposed to...
My RIR actually came from a local farmer who breeds them and a couple other breeds. That’s certainly not to say she has any better genes than a Hatchery, just that she didn’t come from one. The only birds we got from a Hatchery are the EEs and the Calicos. Both of which have been healthy and...
What is the difference between a RIR and a Production Red? We have one RIR in our flock already. She has black tips on her tail feathers, and is otherwise a rich rust color. This bird is about the same color as our Golden Comet, but with black tips on the wing feathers, and no white.
With a comb that red at roughly 7 weeks old, I’m gonna say it looks like a cockerel to me.
I have 10 week old Easter Eggers that look similar to this, and all my pullets still have very faint colored combs that are just starting to develop. My cockerels’ combs look like the one you have there.
TSC told me the three chicks I bought were Calico Princess. From what I’ve read about the bread, they are sex-linked, which would mean that there is almost zero chance a boy would get mixed up with the girls. However, as chicks they all looked identical, almost exactly like my Comet babies. And...
I peck at my owner’s legs and feet until she picks me up and carries me around while she does her chores.
I crow, attack anything I deem a threat, and mount all my favorite ladies frequently. I stopped laying eggs months ago.
I monopolize everyone’s favorite nesting box so they have to...
Right now the whole flock is on starter feed rations, with an extra source of calcium available for my layers, “free choice” style above the reach of the chicks. In about 3 weeks the flock will switch over to grower/finisher feed.
Treats include dried meal worms 1-2x/week, fruits&veggies...
The enclosure is roughly 30’x30’ total, with two coops, a larger one for the layers, and a smaller one that the chicks are currently using. I put a feeder in the smaller coop, and restricted the door size so that only the chicks can get in for now. It seems to be working. The little boys...
The layer is a 1.5 year old Black sex-link. I’m not sure how much she’d be worth as I’ve heard they will only lay consistently for 3ish years. She is a good layer now though, laying 5-6 eggs/week. I have the two feeders separated on opposite sides of the enclosure, but I will see if I can...
i have a hen who is bullying my two 7 week old chicks. She is not the alpha, and also not the lowest on the ladder, but she won’t let the babies eat. She guards the food dispenser and attacks them if the go near it. I added a second feeder, and she has taken to guarding both. The chicks have...
How did the chicks do outside? We are in Kansas City and haven’t moved our two week olds out yet. I’ve been too concerned because every time we shut off the heat source they all huddle in a pile like they are cold.
