My dad bought 12 young chukars yesterday and neither he or myself know much about them. He likes the way they sound, and thought it would be fun to raise some. Currently these birds, whick are about the size of his jumbo brown quail, are in a cage off the ground that is a 2 foot by 3 foot and 18...

    Do hens sometimes gobble?

Yesterday, I purchased 5 young (4-5) month old turkeys. 3 Narrangansett and 2 bronze to put with my 3 Royal Palms (2 male and 1 female). I am looking forward to seeing what I get from these birds. However about 15 minutes after I put these 5 "hens" in a pen, one of them began to gobble. I have...

    Russellville here

That is fine. It is nice to have a place to go to that one can talk to others with similar interests. I have been raising poultry for almost 30 years and find it very relaxing. Now if I could only find one or two more young RP hens all could be right in my world. lol

    Royal Palms

I used to raise bourban red turkeys and know from experience that both males and females will strut when young. I had seven babies that were a month old and all seven strutted. When they grew up there were 3 males and 4 females. I have not thought of the tail feathers and will look into that...

    Royal Palms

I have heard that Royal Palms start off completely white, if so when do they start to get the black markings on them. And how do you tell the jakes from the young hens. I am thinking about getting a few, but don"t want to wind up with a bunch of jakes and no hens or vice versa.

    What is the difference?

from your reply, I believe all the eggs I was given to hatch must be the jumbo coturnix, because they all are spotted, no white eggs. I also think my current quail that I was told were Texas Jumbo Browns, must be Jumbo Coturnix. I did see some the other day that the man was calling Texas A&M's...

    Brooder material

What kind of material do you put in for your baby quail to walk around on. I was told that pine shavings were bad and would kill the baby quail, is this true. I will be have some hatch in a couple weeks and want to make sure they are safe.

Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Quote: If you want to do the cross, it's up to you. But, what goals would you have? Marans have white legs/skin and feathered legs. Barnevelders have yellow legs/skin and clean legs. If you are just breeding for a backyard flock mixing is fine. But if you mix the two breeds you can mess up...

Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Has anyone ever tried crossing a Barnvelder with a marans. I have both types and my barnies seem as healthy as can be, but my marans are alway sickly. I was thinking of crossing these to see if I can get a bird that still looks maranish, but with more vigor. This is because I have had birds with...

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have a question for all the marans people out there. I started raising this beautiful birds this summer and have Black Coppers, Blue Coppers, and Blue Splashes. I also have Welsummers and EE. This has been the worse year I have ever had for sickly chickens. I built new pens and coops to start...

    what is your favorite breed?

I have had 30-40 different breeds of poultry, but right now my favorite is the Welsummers. I have found them to be very attractive, friendly, easy to work with and layers of nice eggs. Mine are spoiled rotten and will stand next to the gate when they see me, waiting for me to open the gate so...

Quote: ABSOLUTELY - - - REMOVE HIM FROM THE SMALL PULLETS. IT took my roo over a month to get his technique down pat and he had bigger hens to practice on. He still managed to damage their combs and rip out saddle feathers. I separated my boy from the girls during the day and then let him...
