Royal Palms

I have heard that Royal Palms start off completely white, if so when do they start to get the black markings on them. And how do you tell the jakes from the young hens. I am thinking about getting a few, but don"t want to wind up with a bunch of jakes and no hens or vice versa.

yep its true...or at least that's what happened to mine... he was a couple months when he started getting black... & u tell gender from any other turkey...if the male courts and gobbles the female chirps and lay eggs...unless u mean when they're younger--then idk

Not bragging on myself but the man I buy my turkeys from says that he can't tell the sex when they are small. However, every time I have had babies I can tell the difference. Once these two babies hatches out 2 weeks ago 2 days after they were born I knew the sex. This is how I can tell: 1) the males are always bigger (even when they are babies)
2) if you look the fan (tail feathers) on the males are bigger than the females
3) plus the males will strut...my baby just strutted last week and he's only 1 week old at the time.

I could be wrong but I have been right every time!

I used to raise bourban red turkeys and know from experience that both males and females will strut when young. I had seven babies that were a month old and all seven strutted. When they grew up there were 3 males and 4 females. I have not thought of the tail feathers and will look into that though. I was thinking the feet or legs may have some differences too but am not sure.

Every time I had babies I could tell right away too... but the turkeys? I have to wait for them...

well, I got me some royal palms and yep 4 are jakes and only 1 is a hen. lol. well I guess I will have a couple of jakes to sell and am looking for a hen or two.
