How many here are actual backyarders vs. Farmers?

I am inside city limits with neighbors on 3 sides and a road between me and the 4th side. I have a medium sized backyard. I have a nice coop with two attached runs that are separate from each other. One that is fully enclosed when we aren't home and one that is open on top for when we are home...

Broody question, vanishing egg and antibiotic question

I just checked the coop even though they were up for the night and guess what? There were two large snakes inside. One had just swallowed an egg and the other was still deciding which one he liked best.

    Broody killed chicks!

Thanks for all the advice. She still won't come off the nest even though the eggs and chicks are gone. I am going to get her some more eggs tomorrow and set her up in a dog crate. and except for food and water and letting her out of the crate, leave her alone until I see chicks. If the next...

    Broody killed chicks!

Thanks for the advice. We were poking our head in there often. Maybe that caused her to smother them? I guess we'll try again if she wants to set some more.

    Broody killed chicks!

Thanks for the sympathy. I know and my son knows that life and nature don't always work out the way we hope, but to start off with 8 eggs and end up with 3 fully formed dead chicks is more disappointment than what we expected. I hope somebody will have an answer.

    Broody killed chicks!

Hi, I had a Black Australorp who went broody so I bought her some fertilized eggs to hatch. Yesterday two of them started to hatch. One of them was at least 60% hatched in the afternoon, but by evening had died shrink-wrapped. At the time I found the dead chick, the other chick was 90%...

Broody question, vanishing egg and antibiotic question

Yes, I'm sure they are gone. I actually have lifter her up several times because as soon as she jumps down for a drink or a snack, another hen jumps up and lays eggs in her box. I didn't know that she might eat them if they had died. Yes, I had heard that mothballs are toxic. I was going to...

Broody question, vanishing egg and antibiotic question

I have a hen that went broody so we bought her some fertilized eggs and they are due to hatch in 2 days. The nest boxes are off the floor a foot or so. What should I put there so the chicks can leave the nest? Also, will they need to go back up to sleep at night? She only has 3 eggs. Also, we...

    First time with a broody

Hi, I have 14 egg laying hens of various breeds, but a few days ago an Australorp decided to go broody. We don't have a rooster, so we just kept dealing with her pecking and growling when we came to collect the eggs under her. Anyway, I felt sorry for her today and drove down the road and...

    newbie question about hatching

Thanks. The one that I posted the question about was not making any effort, so I peeled a little bit of egg and membrane back after seeing that it was not bloody. I also moistened the membrane a bit. Now, it is making a little more movements, so I am leaving it alone. The one that pipped this...

    newbie question about hatching

Hi, My 5-year-old son and I are new to this. We didn't have the money for an incubator, so we just used an empty 10-gallon aquarium. I bought a digital thermometer/humidity gauge and put the eggs on meat roasting racks. I put water in the bottom under the racks and sprayed the glass regularly...
